Friday News Wrap-Up 11 May 2012
It's great to be back in the saddle, even if I haven't fully recovered. Thankfully not too much was missed over the last couple weeks. Despite the lack of news amends must be made and there's a bit more meat to the review and picks of the week as a result.
So, lets not dilly-dally and jump straight in to the Friday News Wrap-Up for the 11th of May, 2012.
Ascension: Storm of Souls - Top Deck Builder Gets Better
It has been a while since AppSpy first had the chance to play Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer, but much like the board game it proved to be seriously addictive and a lot of fun. Since then an expansion has been added to the game, but more importan... Read More
N.O.V.A. 3 - Near Orbit Va... Review
N.O.V.A. 3 (NOVA3) is not above bombast and indeed it kicks things off in an explosive and gorgeous way. What follows is most certainly Gameloft's best entry in the science-fiction FPS series, but an unrelenting series of sequences that seem incomplete or untested drag the game back from the brink of excellence. The setting is a familiar one - Earth (or what remains of it) is under attack and you as the disgruntled, gravel-voiced hero are called back (despite saying you were done help...
Top 3 iPhone Games for April 2012
April has been an odd month - not particularly bursting with amazing titles, but not short of highlights either. As such this month's list is far more personal than ever and I'll try to explain my choices as best I can. Was there something you went gaga for this April? Let us know down in the comments.
For now, this is AppSpy.com's Top 3 iPhone Games for April, 2012.
Max Payne Mobile (Rockstar Games) $2.99 Univ.
I accept that I seem to be in the minority in loving the iOS port of Rockstar Games' seminal third-person shooter, but its simplicity is what works in its favor, especially on a touch device. Clearing out rooms of enemies with a casual spray of a weap... Read More
Conceptis Fill-a-Pix Review
[Editor's Note: Apologies for the video being unavailable for so long - YouTube is currently updating their back end again and it seems some features are missing at this time. We've found a work-around for now and hope this won't be an issue again soon!] Earlier we reviewed Prismapix, a puzzle game where the player uses minesweeper-like clues to know what tiles are safe to uncover a picture on and which are not. That game was based on a simpler kind of logic puzzle, and that's exactly...
Shark Dash Review
After first learning about Shark Dash, one thought pinged around my mind, 'I wonder who developed this game for Chillingo/Clickgamer'... after a double-take I realized I was dealing with a Gameloft title and my world promptly fell on its head. All of this may sound melodramatic, but gamers have long come to terms with the App Store's cliches, though if Shark Dash proves anything it's that Gameloft has the chops to produce fresh and addictive games. You should know the basic formula by...
PrismaPix Review
There's a reason why we at AppSpy recently reviewed Kris Pixton's latest release in the Pathpix series - it was to act as a refresher or reminder of the developer's particular puzzling style. Ultimately it acts as a perfect introduction to an entirely new (relatively speaking) puzzling experience in the form of PrismaPix, and while it may feature the same core goals of PathPix, the gameplay itself is fresh and utterly engrossing. Mixing elements of games such as Minesweeper, Fill-a-Pi...
Burnout™ CRASH! Review
Mayhem and destruction - these two factors have continually kept the Burnout series addictive and appealing to play, no matter its iteration. Burnout Crash! by Criterion Games and EA Mobile is no exception, though its reliance on random success can wear thin if you're after something that requires more skill. Don't let that thought get you down though. Learning to control your vehicle (in so much as you can) to create the biggest chain reactions can be immensely rewarding - not the le...
Sponsored Feature: Neuchatel On Bankers vs. H...
Remember when it used to be cool to hate lawyers because they suckled at the teat of Satan every morning for breakfast before going to work on a kitten-drawn cart made entirely of baby skeletons?
Well, times have changed, and it's now the bankers who occupy that particular place in our 'hearts' and minds.
This has led to the, perhaps inevitable, iPhone game Bankers vs. Humans. In Neuchatel's delightfully tongue-in-cheek game, you play as either a banker or a human, who naturally have different views on the Occupy movement, and who find increasingly ridiculous reasons to jump out of aeroplanes and dodge various debris.
Karan Khemani, CEO of Neuchatel, told us more about the game's influenc... Read More
Friday News Wrap-Up 13 April 2012
Another week, another Wrap-Up... except for that last Friday. I was too busy gorging myself on pre-Easter candy and slipping in to a sugar-coma; I assure you, the headache I received was more than enough punishment for not having something prepared. However, lets cut to the chase.
This is the Friday News Wrap-Up for the 13th of April, 2012.
Spellsword - Glorious arena platforming
While Muffin Knight may have beaten Super Crate Box to the punch on the iOS platform (and subsequently forged its own path), the base concept of arena-based platform combat is a simple, but addictive one. I'm glad to see more developers trying their hand at this burgeoning genre. Spe... Read More
Friday News Wrap-Up 30 March 2012
This week started out like any other - Monday I was full of energy, Tuesday I suffered from a bout of being unable to get out of first gear and well... the rest of the week is an honest blur of work, mixed with the occasional break to play League of Legends (...yes, I'm addicted). To cap things off, the news this week is well... exciting is the only way to describe it, so lets jump right in.
This is the Friday News Wrap-Up for the 30th of March, 2011.
Bug Princess 2 - CAVE just got serious
It seems we can't go a month without saying something about the Japanese bullet-hell specialist CAVE, but considering how iOS devices have become almost the defacto home of... Read More
Bitter Sam Review
Bitter Sam by Moon Active seems to be desperate to defy conventions - its main character seems manically depressed, there's no three-star system in sight, and the almost morbid way in which you can fail a level is a shock the first few times it occurs. And yet, despite this, Bitter Sam is unabashedly cute, funny and fun. Sam's life apparently wasn't doing so well even before a scientist captured and decided to drop him down a deep hole. He'll need to avoid spiked platforms, spinning b...
Swordigo Review
To cut to the chase and put things simply, if you've ever wondered what it would be like if someone managed to boil down the Zelda series, turn it in to a platformer with RPG elements and dump it on the App Store, it would look and play a little like Swordigo by Touch Foo. That's high praise for a game, but Swordigo doesn't hold back and throws you right in to an otherwise generic fantasy storyline without hesitation. Your master has died in an attempt to thwart the return of evil to ...
SpellTower Review
Your average word game never fails to impress on some level as word formation is such a simple yet addictive puzzle for our brains to solve. What sets some above others is not only the format of finding words, but the elegance of word creation itself, and this is where Spelltower by Zach Gage shines. Words are created by swiping through letters. Not just vertically and horizontally however, but diagonally as well. And it's not to say it's like a word find either. You can start your wo...
Angry Birds Space Review
If any game on the App Store deserves a true sequel, it's Angry Birds. Rovio Mobile's classic hit still shapes the way in which developers approach making games for iOS device owners and while some of that success is owed to marketing, it's hard to argue against the game's approachable and addictive design. Now, after many half-steps, Angry Birds Space is the first title in the series to move the game forward, giving fans of the series something they can truly sink their teeth in to. ...
MotoHeroz Review
Much like CAVE and their predictable, but almost always excellent bullet-hell shooters, RedLynx can be counted upon to add to their collection of time-trial titles. Fresh off the heels of their update to the Draw Race series, MotoHeroz is a side-on time-trial racer, but it's not entirely new for the company as it repackages a stripped down version of the Nintendo Wii title of the same name for the iOS platform. 'Stripped down' has such a nasty sound to it though and all you're likely ...
