Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin (November 2, 1699 to December 6, 1779) was a popular 18th century French painter, considered to be one of the great masters of still life. Chardin was born in Paris, he very rarely left the city. He lived on the Left Bank close to Saint-Sulpice until 1757, when Louis XV granted him a studio and living quarters at the Louvre.
