Description

The Fundação Bienal de São Paulo is one of the most important international institutions to foster contemporary art, and its impact on the development of Brazilian visual arts is widely recognized. The Arts Biennial, its most significant accomplishment, not only presents to diverse audiences the output of Brazilian and foreign artists, but also attracts the gaze of the world to our country’s contemporary art. Furthermore, the show doubles as a periscope, for it breaks the isolation of a nation whose social and cultural conditions and dimensions deem the contact with the vast art production difficult and promotes the irreplaceable approach to art-whose digital images could never convey the revealing and overwhelming moment of awe in the face of Art.

After the 6th Bienal, the Foundation was created (1962) to take over the exhibition organization that, up until then, had been under the successful management of the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo - MAM-SP. The venue it occupies, known as its home, only came to house the Biennials from its 4th edition onwards, in 1957. Since 1951, twenty-eight Biennials have been produced and in 2010 the 29th Bienal de São Paulo will be presented, with a welcoming aura of renewal.

The Bienal is about to celebrate its 60th anniversary. On this occasion, as it gazes to the past and inevitably wonders about and investigates the future, the institution is building a new Web site we sincerely hope will go far beyond merely telling a story. The presence of the Fundação Bienal in the digital world presents itself as an expedition: What could possibly come from this mission to the unknown? Beware, you will soon be a part of it.
