Players capture cards from a central layout by playing a card of the same month (flower). The aim is to collect scoring combinations among the cards captured. 둘이서 하는 코이코이(일본어: こいこい)라는 일본의 화투 놀이와 비슷하다.

고스톱 놀이의 세부 규칙은 각 지역마다 차이가 있을 뿐만 아니라, 온라인에서 고스톱 서비스를 제공하는 업체 별로 차이가 있다.
