Description

Can a place tell a musical story? Is it possible to move around inside a composition?
What does the main square in Ystad, Sweden, sound like when rythmical wingbeats transport you to other worlds?

Around the clock on the main square in Ystad: Layers of Love - a location conscious composition in you headphones by Cennet Jönsson.

You approach the main square in Ystad. A few improvised notes become melodies that transport you to a world of rocking West African rhythms. The sound of soprano saxophone flies freely over boiling percussion and drums when Africa meets flamenco, and the music is enriched by the interwoven sounds of several instruments. The distance from Ystad to Dakar or Seville becomes negligible as a result of the musicians’ almost telepathic interplay. After an intensive flight, you are returned to the origin and land once again in free improvisation.

Layers of Love is a cyclic musical piece with several layers that combine music defined by notes with improvised music. The composer’s own perception of the beautiful main square in Ystad, with its old town hall and other surrounding buildings, as well as the traffic and pedestrian thoroughfares, etc. has had a major impact on the structure of the piece. The square has become a kind of geographical climax represented by the Afro-groove of the music and the ensemble playing in tutti.

Welcome into the invisible concert hall presented by Musik i Syd, premiering during the Ystad Sweden Jazz festival. Make sure your headphones are plugged in so that you can join this rythmical journey inspired by it’s location, a musical experience that changes as you move around affected by your location.
