PROS

  • Deceptively simple spatial 3D jigsaw puzzle gameplay.
  • Elegant presentation; crisp, smooth and easy to identify.
  • Over 240 puzzles to solve in seven categories.

CONS

  • Difficulty related to your ability to recognize an object; makes it hard to smooth out progression as you can be stumped by an unfamiliar item.

VERDICT

Blueprint 3D isn't a hardcore game in the 'gamer' sense of the term, nor is it particularly taxing as a puzzler, but it still manages to sit alongside casual titles like Cut The Rope as it combines elegant simplicity in controls, gameplay and design to make it a truly engaging distraction for iOS gamers.

Full Review

Solving a jigsaw puzzle is a pastime that has survived for generations and may well continue to see its appeal in to the future as fans of the simple time-waster test their observation skills to match and piece together beautiful images one jagged piece at a time. Blueprint 3D by FDG Mobile Games pushes the limits of the concept by taking imagery and blowing it up in to dozens, if not hundreds of fragments ballooned out in to a 3D space and it's up to you to reassemble it in mere seconds.

Sounds impossible? Thankfully the order of the pieces are already figured out for you, but you'll still need to rotate and spin the 3D mess in order to bring to focus the 2D image you're after. This is easier said than done as pieces are also skewed and twisted to conform to only one specific perspective, making it hard to simply swipe around to cheat the system.

It's a masterfully considered puzzle concept with a simple control scheme of swiping to spin and double-touch twisting to rotate the perspective accordingly. Stars are awarded for the speed in which you can align the fragments correctly and with over 240 puzzles currently available there's a lot to conquer.

Part of what makes Blueprint 3D challenging is your own familiarity with a variety of objects. Each category picks a handful of common and somewhat uncommon sights, making it hard to realize whether or not you're even close to solving a puzzle until it locks in and gives you your final score.

With continued support from FDG, Blueprint 3D could have truly amazing longevity as you constantly jump in to new categories of images set to stump you. Though even without this, the game is immediately engaging and rewarding and a definite must have for casual and puzzle gamers alike.

If you really enjoy this, you might also want to check out "Pictorial" or "Pictorial HD" by Sergey Vasiliev. At this moment both versions are free, but I have no idea how long it will last.

Personally, I love spinning puzzles and am also a huge fan of tangram style puzzles. The only thing that bugs me about Blueprint 3D is the iPad version is 3x the price of the iPod version and it's not even Universal. I hate when developers do that.

As much as I love the looks of this, I'll be waiting for a price drop.

thanks for that tip, Pensketch. I saw Pictorial highlighted in FreeAppADay, but didn't exactly realize from the description that this was a spinning puzzle (also didn't know that had become a genre!). Downloaded it earlier, and it is pretty good. Still have to unlock the full version after two "worlds," but fun while it lasts.

Andrew, you may want to look up "LostPixels" by WodeMobile on the AppStore. From the description you have of Blueprint 3D (I haven't played it yet), it sounds like LostPixels did it first.

BTW, I'm not knocking Blueprint--it just sounds like they refined the same mechanic.
