Crazy Bomber
Download on the AppStore
3 out of 5

PROS

  • Very cute and colorful presentation.
  • In-app purchases and the game store are reserved and not obnoxious.

CONS

  • Joystick doesn't give you the best freedom of movement.
  • Single player pretty bland and multiplayer is only unlocked by playing through it.

VERDICT

This is Bomberman with a cutesy fantasy overlay. Like Bomberman, multiplayer can be an absolute blast, but having to play single player to unlock it is a chore.

Calm down everybody. This game has nothing to do with terrorists. Well unless you believe the Bomberman franchise has connections to terrorism. I mean, bombs have plenty of other uses than blowing stuff up... right? Anyways, pick your cute little monster and help them blow up all the nasties that inhabit each stage. This is what Crazy Bomber is all about.

The allusions to Bomberman stated previously are very apt. You move via a d-pad and pressing the bomb button will drop a bomb, that when detonated will shoot explosion out in a four way radius. If you or an enemy is caught in that radius, death for the enemy, health off your bar for you. Obstacles such as trees drop new bombs once removed and when all the enemies are deceased, the exit will glow and allow you passage to the next area.

The character select screen should have been the giveaway about the art direction taken for this game. Cute is the order of the day. Look at dat widdle vampire. Awwww! Ahem. Aside from some sound effects taken for the library that every single iPhone game seems to use, the sound design adds to this atmosphere.

Overall the single player feels a little dull. Perhaps it's the unresponsive d-pad or just that this type of game has always been about blowing up your friends in multiplayer. This game has multiplayer all right, but it needs to be unlocked. Nevertheless, the art style should appeal to a certain type of gamer and at its core, this is a solid bomb blasting title.
