PROS

  • Deeply challenging endless runner gameplay.
  • Fun pixel-art visual style.

CONS

  • Fussy touch recognition.
  • No music or iTunes support.

VERDICT

Much of the endless runner's appeal comes from being so simple, but for those looking to try something more than just a reflex tester DynamoKid provides a deeper (if currently flawed) challenge.

Endless runners have been getting their time in the sun lately and DynamoKid Touch by OrangePixel attempts to fill an odd niche in the market by ramping up the challenge to almost frustrating levels. However instead of putting the game down you'll find yourself quickly reloading the level, bemused at how much time you're spending on a game that refuses to play fair.

DynamoKid extends the basic 'tap to jump' setup used in most endless runners by letting you tap and swipe the screen to eliminate enemies, draw new platforms and unlock bonus stars to gain access to new levels. Bonus points are also awarded for managing to juggle enemies with taps or jumping on their heads. This would be much easier if the input didn't feel slightly lagged, requiring vigorous rubs to ensure stars and platforms recognize being touched.

The artwork carries OrangePixel's distinct pixel-art style that you'll recognize from Mini Plane and much like their previous title there's no in game music and the sound effects have been kept sparse. This is a shame because iTunes isn't directly supported, however if you have Apple ear-buds you can force-play music.

But despite its negative points, DynamoKid Touch remains surprisingly addictive with gameplay that goes beyond testing your reaction-speed. The initial appeal may wear off quickly for some casual gamers, but updates could quickly make this a strong and highly addictive game to play.
