The 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio officially kick off tomorrow, August 5. Whether you're watching from afar or planning to head to Brazil to catch some of it live, here are some essential apps to enhance your experience.

It's felt like Rio 2016 has been in the news for all the wrong reasons of late, but once the opening ceremony kicks off on August 5, all attention will be on the sporting action.

However you plan to follow the 306 sporting events spread across two weeks, several of these apps will come in handy.

Rio 2016

Rio 2016

Let's start with the most obvious one - the official Rio 2016 app. This is where you come for all the up to date event times and results, as well as for detailed spectator guides. For those who are in Rio, you'll also get detailed venue guides to help you find your way around.

The Olympics - Official App

Official Olympics app

Here's another handy official app to have to hand - this time from the International Olympic Committee. The Olympics - Official App will provide useful context by providing information on previous Olympic Games, as well as information on Rio 2016 itself.

Team GB Live

Team GB

If you're from the UK, like most of the AppSpy staff, then you'll probably be monitoring the fortunes of the British athletes that little bit closer than the rest. This app from the British Olympic Association will help you to do that, with full schedules and results for all of the Team GB athletes.

Rio de Janeiro - City Guide & Offline Map

Heading out to Rio to soak up some of that Olympic atmosphere? Then we recommend grabbing this handy travel app. It's from Tripwolf, a respected travel app maker, so you know you're getting a quality product. Not only does the app provide recommendations from Fodors on what to do in Rio, it also features a handy offline city map for getting around without munching your roaming data allowance.

BBC Sport

BBC Sport

You've got the official Olympics apps, but for a more zoomed out, impartial perspective on events unfolding in Rio (not all of which will be about the sport itself) you can't do much better than the BBC Sport app. It can be set up to ping you with all the headlines from the 2016 Olympics.

MetroRio

MetroRio

Another app for those who are heading out to Rio. MetroRio will help you to navigate the city's bustling subway system, and will point you in the direction of the city's many must-see sights. MetroRio is an officially endorsed app from the company that runs the service, so you know you can trust its service updates and route recommendations.
