The fact of the matter is we all like to save a bit of money. Maybe it’s eating mouldy bread every now and then, or finding leftover foreign currency and trying to get it exchanged even when you know there’s probably not enough for a sandwich there and it’s going to be really embarrassing.

And that’s where this new regular feature comes in. Every Wednesday we’re going to have a long hard look at the five best games that are on sale on the App Store.

We’ll point you in the right direction to make your money go that little bit further. And the names of the games will take you to the App Store. Even better!

So without further ado, here are this week’s top five. I think you’ll find that there are some real gems in there, even if Black Friday and Cyber Monday and all the rest of that nonsense is now a beautifully distant memory. List!

Transistor

An action RPG from the dev behind Bastion, Transistor is set in a dystopian future and sees you slashing your way through a mystery to try and remember who you are.

It also features a talking sword, one of the best soundtracks this side of the best soundtrack awards, and it looks absolutely stunning.

It might not have the simplistic sway of Bastion, but this is one that’s definitely worth checking out.

Severed

A swipey slashy arcade game from the dev that made the excellent wrestling platformer Guacamelee. Think Fruit Ninja but for grown ups.

You need to cut up your foes with precisions. And then cut them up some more. Essentially there’s a lot of cutting up going on here.

It looks amazing, it works brilliantly on mobile, and there’s a popping swagger to everything that it does that makes it almost impossible to dislike.

Tsuro

A game that’s ostensibly about dragons but, in the end, doesn’t really feature that many dragons. It’s a boardgame essentially about making your way across a grid.

But it’s far more challenging than that might originally sound, and there are other dragons sliding around that you need to avoid.

Think of it like a more measured version of multiplayer snake and you’re about halfway there. Kitten on a stair.

Mayhem!

A super fast twitchy game of getting the hell away from lasers. It’s got chunky pixels, it’s got a bobble headed protagonist!

And on top of all of that it is super tough. Like the sort of tough that makes you question why you even started playing games in the first place.

This one’s free at the moment, and it’s well worth checking out at that price. Just be aware that you’re going to spend a lot of time dead and swearing while you play it.

Hell: Fight For Gilrand

A big massive turn-based fantasy strategy game rounds us off this week. It’s a collaboration between Slitherine and Hunted Cow, so you know it’s got some pedigree.

The focus here is on skirmishes, and it works brilliantly on mobile. As well as a huge single player campaign, there’s same-device and online multiplayer too.

It looks great, it plays great, and right now it doesn’t cost as much as it usually does. That’s a win win win situation if ever I’ve seen one.
