There are an awful lot of turn-based strategy games on the App Store, but which are the best? And, more importantly, which are the best that started out life as mobile games. There are a lot of slick ports for your phone and tablet, but I thought we'd focus on games built from the ground up for mobile.

So that's what this week's Tuesday best-of is all about. Deep tactical experiences that were always meant to end up in your pocket. And I think I've found three proper gems that should keep fans of the genre super happy.

As usual you can click on the emboldened names of the games below to download them. And if you've got your own suggestions for our readers to play, feel free to toss them carelessly into the comments at the bottom of the article.

RAD Soldiers

A beautifully tight strategy game that sees you leading a team of the titular soldiers into a variety of skirmishes. Each character has its own skillset, and figuring out how to use them best is part of the fun. It looks gorgeous, it plays brilliantly, and even though it's free to play there's a ridiculous amount to discover here.

X-Mercs

Sure, it's a riff on the X-Com template, but it's done with such aplomb that it's pretty difficult to dislike. Push through legions of super gross aliens, giving out orders and trying to stay alive. It's dank and sci-fi and pretty darn special. And if you've got the bottle for it it'll suck you in for a good long time.

Templar Battleforce

A game that riffs on plenty of other licenses, but isn't afraid to walk its own path either. Clunky space marines stomp through claustrophobic missions, hopefully guided by your expert hand. It's tough, it's deep, and you're going to get jammed into its rhythm of strategic attack and defence.
