The Tuesday best of - Word games for iPhone and iPad

By , on July 25, 2017

Tuesday is here. It's Tuesday everyone. Okay, real talk, does anyone know what Tuesday is actually for? Has anything important ever happened on a Tuesday? Look back through your history books, and I bet you'll find that literally zero things have occurred on a Tuesday.

Anyway, here at AppSpy on Tuesdays, we like to buck the trend by trying to do something interesting. It usually involves rounding up three of the best games in a genre. And that's what we're doing today. And we're having a good long look at word games.

As usual you can click on the emboldened names of the games below to swoop over to the App Store and download them. And if you think there should be other games in the list, well, why don't you tell us in the comments at the end of the article. Ah go on.

Letterpress

This one is a multiplayer game. It's sort of like chess getting in a fight with a crossword. You don't just have to know words, you have to try and out-think your opponent as well. Turn enough of the board to your colour and you'll win. But it's a lot more complicated, and entertaining, than it sounds.

Spellspire

Word games don't have to be staid. This one is essentially an action RPG, it just so happens that rather than tapping buttons to murder your foes, here you're spelling out word. It's fast and furious, and adds an extra element to the genre that's sure to make it appeal to ever more people. Plus you get a cool wizard hat.

Spelltower

Probably THE classic mobile word game. There are a number of different modes, but they all involve drawing lines between letters to make words. Sometimes you're trying to collapse the pile and get as many words as possible, sometimes you're trying to stop the towers reaching the top of the screen. Slick, brilliantly put together, and fearsomely addictive.
