Sometimes you don't want to shoot people in the face. Or punch people in the face. Or do anything mean to anyone's face. And at times like that you need a puzzle games. But with so many on the App Store it's sometimes hard to figure out which one is best for you.

But don't you worry little one, because that's where this list comes in. We've picked the five very best iPhone and iPad puzzlers that you can download now. We've given you links, we've given you videos, we've given you everything you need to make an informed decision.

After all, when it comes to games that tax your brain power, making an informed decision is probably one of the most important things you can do.

A first person puzzler from the mind of the dev behind classic indie platformer Braid. It's probably the most hands-off game you're ever going to play. Walk through a lush island interacting with the strange things that you find. It's an absorbing, intriguing, and at times infuriating adventure that's going to have you hooked from your first step to your last.

Prune - download for iOS

This one's all about slicing up trees. Not in a random, all-trees-must-die way, but so that the plants can grow into the sun. It's beautiful, meditative, and has a twist towards the end that's going to come like a kick in the chest. Puzzlers can be powerful, and Prune is probably the finest example of that.

Threes! - download for iOS

The game that launched a thousand clones, not one of which ever came close to matching its majesty. It's a game about squishing together numbers to make bigger numbers. There's a rich indie charm running through every aspect of the experience, and few games can create a one-more-go itch that's quite as scratchy as Threes! does.

Monument Valley 2 - download for iOS

Calm, beautiful, and unlike most everything else on the App Store. Monument Valley 2 is an adventure through time, space, and plenty of the other dimensions, and every second of it is polished to the sort of sheen that few other games can manage. If you've not played this yet, you're not allowed to play any other mobile games before you do.

Lara Croft GO - download for iOS

Of all the GO games, Lara Croft's outing is definitely the finest. It transposes the action of Tomb Raider and places it in a grid-based puzzle arena. Get past snakes, avoid traps, and keep away from the things that want to kill you. It's a real shame Square isn't making any more of these, but all of them are worth playing if you get the chance.
