It's time for us to start the top three. These games are the cream of the crop - the 3 best games that came out for iPhone and iPad in 2018. This week we've already revealed our pick for the fifth best game of the year, as well as our choice for the fourth best game from 2018. And if you want to read about games 10-4 you can find out about them by clicking this link.

Now that's out of the way, we can move on to the game itself. This one was a huge surprise when it came out, but it deserves its place on this list for being the finest puzzler that came to the App Store over the past year.

Evergarden

The thing with Evergarden is that it isn't just a puzzler - there's so much more going on behind the scenes in the game, and while it doesn't hold your hand, you're going to be able to discover it all on your own.

The basics of the game involve matching stuff, but there are secrets to discover and different ways to play, and the game makes sure that every challenge it throws at you is just the right side of the difficulty line. It also looks absolutely amazing. The key here is the natural way the game opens itself up for exploration - every time you figure stuff out you feel like you've opened a door to even more revelations. There aren't that many games that can do that, and fewer still that can do it as well as Evergarden.

Evergarden isn't just a great-looking, great-playing game, it's also got a bigger heart than almost everything else on the App Store. This is the sort of experience that's going to stick with you long after you lay your phone or tablet down.
