Hey there loyal Appspy readers!

For our second edition of ‘The Question’, I asked you what excited you so much about the iPhone platform. The majority of the responses mentioned not only the portability of the platform (as everyone takes their phone with them no matter where they go), but the accessibility of games as well. With dozens of titles released each week, it’s true that players are never at want for gaming content. Of course it is difficult to separate the good from the bad when there is such a consistent slew of releases, but that’s why Appspy is here, to help steer you right!

Now for my answer. What excites me most about the iOS platform more than anything else is the low barrier to entry for developers. I’m in my early 30s and have been playing videogames for the majority of that time (since I was three or four). One of the driving factors of entertainment is that we as consumers are always looking for something new. As we age, the same old experiences don’t excite us as they once had, and the triple A game industry has started to become stale during this last generation of consoles. Luckily as this was taking place, not only was there a huge indie resurgence on the PC (and the console downloadable networks), but the iPhone hit at the right time to take advantage of the movement.

With a new control interface and the notion of designing around quick experiences, the iOS has given rise to a swarm of unique, engaging, fantastic gaming moments, and this momentum does not look to be slowing down anytime soon (especially as a lot of triple A developers are forming their own studios and focusing on the platform). Even after this many years, the potential of the platform is as strong as ever, and I look forward to being swept along for the ride.

Why thank you, Dave.

Wile I may not be as old as you and DarkScience (I've just recently turned 20) I did grow up playing some of the same classic games.

My first video game, that I remember playing, was Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Dark Forces (Released 1995- played it around 1999), shortly followed by the awesome Battle For Naboo on the N64. After those, I had my glorious fill of Super Mario Bros, Croc, GTA III, Spyro The Dragon, Pokémon (Yellow, Blue, and Red versions), Dungeons and Dragons, Sonic Spinball (and the first two Sonic games), Crash Bandicoot, Iggy's Wrecking Balls, and so on.

As I'm sure you guys could attest to, these games (among many, many others) have a unique charm that just keep up coming back for more, no matter how old we get- even if we only play a level or two at a time. However, the same can't much be said about today's games (for the most part) on consoles. Nowadays, we're a gaming industry of copycats, sequels, and blandness.
This isn't to say every game is like this; I do enjoy playing the Elder Scrolls series, just about every Star Wars game I own, and even the rare level or two of HALO 3, or HALO Reach. Games like the HALO series tell a great story in each game (at least in my opinion). But, as of late, the iOS platform has seen the biggest surge of creativity. We have titles like Bastion, Temple Run (not that I play it), Angry Birds, Block Fortress, and so on which bring not only fun new games to the platform, even if some of them are ported, but new and innovative control schemes. As I mentioned before, I mentioned the oh-so-many control types we have that make games both more enjoyable in some aspects and also a bit more immersive. I can't say that Tap and Swipe controls will truly beat having an actual controller in your hands, but it's also in a league all its own and , as Dave said, "this momentum does not look to be slowing down anytime soon."

I also really like your answer, Dave. I think you're relatively correct in the ease of developers coming into the platform. Hehe. I've always wanted to make a game or two of my own- nothing spectacular like Bastion or Modern Combat, but more like a top-down retro RPG or a free-roam sci-fi version of the SkyGamblers series- and it would much more possible for me to learn and develop, if I so chose, for the iOS platform than any other.

In the meantime, I'm going to go back to playing Knights of Pen and Paper, after I read the new Wrap-Up! :3

Thanks Dave!! I too am sadly in my early 30s, first games I remember buying were on cassette tapes! Dizzy the little egg dude being the game I remember playing the most! Your so right about consoles getting stale vs the novel ways new developers are making us play, its definitely exciting times for us gamers!

Hey, if it's to any consolation, I remember having a Floppy Disk for gaming at one point on my computer. Cx

I remember thinking that CDs were going to rule the world once I discovered them.
