The AppSpy end of year awards: The 3 best games for iPhone and iPad of January 2017

It's that time of year again. We're all getting excited that 2017 is nearly over, looking forward with naïve hope that maybe, just maybe, 2018 is going to be slightly better. But there's still time to squeeze some content out of the dregs of the year. So what we're going to do here at App Spy is have a look back at the last 12 months of iOS gaming, and tell you which were the three best games that came out each month in 2017. Because that's just the sort of thing we like to do. January 2017 The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth It might be a port, it might not be perfect on mobile, but The Binding of Isaac is still one of the best roguelikes you can download from the App Store. It's a sup…

Here's everything you need to know about Bridge Constructor Portal

Oh look, it's Thursday. In fact, it's the last Thursday of 2017. That means that this is going to be the last Thursday Find of the year. And it's a pretty good find. I mean, they're all pretty good finds. That is literally the point of this article, so it'd be pretty rubbish if it was pretty rubbish. Anyway, cheers for checking out all of our recommendations, we hope we've helped you find some really great games, and we hope we can keep doing that in 2018. As usual you can click on the emboldened name of the game below to download it from the App Store. And if you've got your own suggestion, why not break with the habit of 2017 and chuck it in the comments at the bottom of the article. Br…

How did a Cuphead knock off make it on to the App Store?

How did a Cuphead knock off make it on to the App Store?

It's been a while since we've seen a flagrant rip off landing on the App Store. But yesterday we all got a bit excited because we thought that Cuphead, a gorgeous looking 2D shooter that has been wowing players on Xbox and Steam, had come out on iOS. That wasn't the case though. It was an elaborate scam. The app was £4.99, and at first glance it looked legit. The developer was right, there was a website, and the screenshots certainly suggested that Cuphead had miraculously made its way to the App Store. The game wasn't up for long though. The developers made it known it was by no-means an official port, and before the day was up it had been deleted from listings. If you spent any mon…

The best gifts for iPhone and iPad gamers this Christmas

It's the Monday before Christmas, which means you've still got a bit of time to go out and get the mobile gamer in your life some presents. Or order them off the internet. I don't know, there aren't any mobile gamers in my life to be honest. Anyway, we thought it was as good a time as any to put together a guide to let you know some of the cool stuff out there that a mobile gamer might just appreciate. I mean, they might not, but don't hold it against us. There's a chance they're just the sort of person who doesn't appreciate getting gifts. You can click on the names of the items below to get them from Amazon. Apart from the iTunes gift card, which you can't buy from Amazon. If you've got…

Here's everything you need to know about Fez Pocket Edition for iPhone and iPad

It's the fourth day of the working week. Or if you're freelance, it's the nth day of infinity. Seriously I'm not even sure it is Thursday. I just had to double check and I'm not 100% that someone isn't trying to fool me into thinking it's a day that it isn't. Anyway, whatever day it is, we're going to have a look at the game that came out on the App Store this week that you definitely should be playing it. It's the Thursday Find, it's just not called that any more for a lot of very boring reasons that, quite frankly, have nothing to do with you. This week we really are spoiled for choice on the App Store though. It's one of those weeks where devs clearly didn't have a call round to see if…

Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is coming to iOS, so here are some other Harry Potter games we'd like to see

Well then, another Harry Potter game has been announced for mobile. It's called Harry Potter: A Hogwart's Mystery, and it's set to land on iOS and Android next year some time. The game's an RPG, and it sees you spending 7 years in the iconic castle. Alongside Harry Potter: Wizard's Unite, that means we're probably going to see at least two HP-themed games landing on the App Store next year. Obviously that got my brain cogs whirring - what else in the wizarding world could be turned into a mobile game? And you know what my brain cogs are like - once they're in gear there's nothing that can stop them except the creation of excellent content. So that's what you're going to get here. A list of…

Here are the 5 best Nitrome games for iPhone and iPad

Nitrome is one of those developers that understands mobile brilliantly. Its games are often unique twists on some age-old formula, and more often that not those twists breathe extravagant and interesting new life into a genre. And since we haven't done one of those round up lists for a while, I figured it was high time we decided what the five best Nitrome games are. To be honest, this list could just be a link to Nitrome's App Store page, but that's lazy content and I simply won't stand for it here. You can click on the names of the games below to grab them from the App Store. And if you think I've got it wrong, or just want to talk about your favourite Nitrome game, then feel free to get…

The Last Jedi is coming soon, so here are the best Star Wars games for iPhone

Star Wars fever is already gripping the world, as you might expect with the eighth film very much on the horizon. But just because the film is coming out on the big screen, that doesn't mean you can't push your face into some small screen action in the meantime. So I figured a round up of the best Star Wars games on the App Store was in order. After all, you gotta chase that sweet, sweet SEO whenever you can. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it anyway. You can download the games by clicking on their names below. And if you think there's something that should be included that we've forgotten about, feel free to wham your own suggestions in the comments at the bottom of the page. And may…

It's not all Clash Royale. These are the iPhone and iPad games that we think would make amazing eSports

Everyone knows that eSports are the big thing right now in mobile gaming. If you don't believe me, check out our sister site Pocket Gamer's coverage of the recent Clash Royale grand finals. It's pretty exciting stuff, y'know, if you're interested in that sort of thing. So far the main thrust of the mobile eSports genre has focused mainly on games like Clash Royale, MOBAs to give them another name. But there's money in RTS games and shooters on other devices, and that got me thinking. What games out there on mobile right now are likely to transfer well to the eSports arena. Basically this is a primer to make sure you're playing the games that are going to end up making you the big bucks in…
