Minecraft - Pocket Edition receives infinite worlds in 0.9.0 update

There is something quite poetic about the way Minecraft - Pocket Edition has you incrementally building a world, while Mojang incrementally bolts on extras to the game around you. However, now it seems that the company has pulled out all the stops with the massive 0.9.0 update, bringing the mobile game's feature set far closer to its PC and console cousins. The most exciting of these changes is that Minecraft - Pocket Edition now features infinite worlds. If you're counting, that's a lot of worlds. Its not just hills and plains for as far as the eye can see either, because 0.9.0 brings a vast range of new environmental features. These include caves, mine-shafts, lakes, and villages f…

Chillingo is releasing base building strategy game Gang of Pirates later this year

Chilllingo is partnering with Nitro Games to bring a new social strategy game called Gang of Pirates to the App Store later this year. The premise for Gang of Pirates will be more than familiar to veterans of Clash of Clans and Boom Beach - though with some rum-swilling nautical debauchery added to the mix. You must build a stronghold on an island of pirates, and developing your base lets you better train and deck out your seafaring troops. Building your defences better fortifies the settlement. That whole thing. Once you're happy with your fortress, its time to attack your unfortunate island neighbours. Sending your fleet to battle other players switches the game to a tactical battle v…

Free-to-play action RPG Kritika: Chaos Unleashed is running wild on the App Store

Gamevil’s anime-styled action RPG Kritika: Chaos Unleashed has just been launched on the App Store. This free-to-play RPG takes the emphasis away from in-depth story telling and shifts it squarely onto combat. Battling enemies and bosses in tight arenas, the action is fast and frantic, with your characters hacking and slashing their way through all in their path. When you aren’t fighting, its time to visit the workshop where you can sharpen your skills and enchant your weapons to increase your chances in battle. Just in case you begin to tire of the main quest, then Kritika also provides two additional modes. Monster Wave is an endless string of battles for you to engag…

Thanks to a collaboration with Capcom, Resident Evil cards and quests are being added to the game for a limited time. Deadman’s Cross battles are the typical CCG fare, with the card combat linked by first-person hunts through the 3D world of New Livingstone. There are 'no current plans' to bring Dynasty Warriors Blast to the West

After yesterday's news that Dynasty Warriors Blast would be heading to Japanese iOS and Android devices this month, we got in touch with Koei Tecmo to confirm a Western release date. Dynasty Warriors fans may want to look away at this point. Or maybe just ensure nothing of value is on the table you're about to flip over. To quote a representative of the company: "there are no current plans to release Musou Blast to the Western territories". The news is a little disappointing for Musou / Dynasty Warriors fans, but we're not hugely surprised. Previous mobile Musou game Dynasty Warriors Slash is yet to hit our shores, and most of Koei Tecmo's mobile catalogue is absent outside of Japan. H…

Dynasty Warriors Blast is coming to iOS and Android

One of Koei Tecmo's official sites has unveiled Dynasty Warriors Blast for iPhone, iPad, and Android, and it's coming out this July in Japan. The official announcement on Koei Tecmo's website refers to the game being based on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 title Dynasty Warriors 7, and indeed the screens so far suggest an intense action game similar to the console outings. But it's likely there will also be some significant differences between the home and mobile platforms too, and there are even vague hints that you will see the various warlords - many of which have starred in the series since 1997 - in a completely new way throughout the campaign. Premium characters will be available…

Google has released the augmented reality game Ingress on the App Store

Google is making interesting use of it world mapping technology with the augmented reality game Ingress that just hit the App Store. A sci-fi backstory frames Ingress. A new power source has been revealed by scientists and, while its benefits may be great some, worry that it may control the way we think. Now a secret war rages around us and you must pick a side: fight to free the power with the Enlightened, or protect our humanity with the Resistance. The goal of Ingress is to search the world around you for landmarks. Using your iPhone to track down targets, you then scan whatever notable marker you have found to activate a portal. Doing this adds to your factions Mind Points in th…

Side-scrolling action-RPG Soul Guardians: Age of Midgard comes to iOS

Side-scrolling action-RPG Soul Guardians: Age of Midgard comes to iOS

The company behind Soul Guardians: Age of Midgard - ZQGame - describes the title as a "hyperactive action RPG", and after spending a little while with the game at E3, I can totally see why. The 2D Japanese-chibi-anime-inspired world, PvP and co-op MMO elements, and side-scrolling role playing gameplay are definitely reminiscent of MapleStory - which is certainly no bad thing. It's the lavishly animated, totally bonkers, completely over-the-top Soul Arts special attacks that set it apart and warrant that "hyperactive" moniker, though. They're really quite something, as you'll see in the trailer. Having spent quite some time on the Android store, Soul Guardians: Age of Midgard is now avai…

Trials Frontier receives a new island in its latest update

Redlynx’s free-to-play iPhone interpretation of its Trials franchise, Trials Frontier, has just been given a huge update that adds an extra track-filled island to the game. This new landmass is named Reaper’s Finger and is not for the faint of heart. Designed for fans of the game who have been demanding more challenge, the six tracks contained on it are intended to test all of your skills. Another huge addition to the game is control customisation. The already responsive interface now allows you to reposition its four control buttons anywhere around the screen. This should let experts carve an extra few seconds off their time or - if you’re anything like us - help you g…

Alphabeats is dropping rhythm-based word puzzles on the App Store now

Alphabeats is new music-inspired word-puzzler from Red Dragon, and is now available on iPhone and iPad. Alphabeats mixes Scrabble with Guitar Hero, asking you to create words from letters that appear in time to music. To create a word you must drag your collection of letters around the bottom of the screen, trying to collect the next letter in sequence while avoiding unwanted ones. With the audio playing a key role, it makes sense that developer Red Dragon has searched for the right music to suit the game. They seem to have had a clear vision in what they wanted, with the soundtrack supplied by a number of electro / chiptune artists including Big Giant Circles, ABXY, and Disasterpeace.…
