MSX shooter Zanac has received a stunningly good port on iOS

MSX shooter Zanac has received a stunningly good port on iOS

Classic games don't often get treated very well when a company ports them over to mobiles, but D4 Enterprise has blown me away with its treatment of Compile's legendary shoot-em-up Zanac, which has just been released on iOS. In Zanac, you pilot the AFX-6502 Zanac as you try to overcome the System, a race of bio-droids who are planning on destroying all of humanity. The game is generally recognised as a significant step forward for the shmup genre, and one step closer to the bullet-hell titles so popular today - the action is fast and explosive, there are plenty of power-ups, and enemies attack you from both air and land. This iOS version of Zanac is a straight port of the original MSX v…

Monster Hunter Explore is coming to iOS and Android in 2015

Monster Hunter Explore is a game about battling monsters, finding treasures and artefacts, and then battling bigger monsters than the monsters you fought before. It's free-to-play, is coming to iOS and Android, will be available in 2015, and I'm incredibly keen to see more. Now here's where things get a bit hazy: Monster Hunter Explore is set to be a "re-born" version of Monster Hunter Smart, a Japan-only release on iOS. How exactly it's going to be "re-born" is a bit of a mystery. And here's where things get a bit disappointing: the Capcom rep I reached out to for information on a Western release for Monster Hunter Explore stated that currently "this title is confirmed only for Japan".…

BioShock will surface on iOS this summer, and we have the first video

Any gamer worth their (sea)salt will likely already be very familiar with the universe of BioShock, and the underwater utopia that is Rapture. But if you've yet to explore the gorgeous and intricately detailed art deco depths of Andrew Ryan's gift to the world (or if you just fancy revisiting it), then you're in luck: BioShock is coming to iOS. The good news is that this port is the full original game of BioShock, and has had its controls optimized for touchscreens, while also supporting MFi controllers. It's also set to be a premium title, so there won't be any free-to-play shenanigans going on here. The bad news is that you'll need a relatively modern device to cope with the strains t…

New Shadowgate trailer reveals evil warlock lord Talimar the Black

If you're a fan of cult classic adventure series Shadowgate, you'll likely be well aware that it's currently being rebooted for iOS and Android (plus PC and Mac). You've probably already seen this side-by-side comparison video of the NES outing and the new version. This weekend, developer Zojoi released a new cinematic trailer focusing on arch villain Talimar the Black, and it's got us even more keen on returning to Castle Shadowgate and the lands of Tyragon. The game is set to be released on August 21st, and will feature the franchise's trademark puzzle solving and decision making. If you're yet to play an entry in the series be warned: the Shadowgate games are not for the faint-hearted…

Please note: top-notch music game Deemo is your free iOS app of the week

"Please note"? Get it? Because Deemo is a music game? Suit yourself, the important thing to take away from my fantastic article title actually comes after the hilarious play on words: Deemo is now available for nothing. It's currently being featured by Apple as part of its weekly app giveaway, so you can pick up this delightful-yet-haunting music game completely free of charge. At review we said "if you enjoy rhythm games you owe it to yourself to try Deemo", and who are we to argue? [App Store link]…

Blood Bowl touches down on iPad and Android tablets as a premium release, but there's a catch

Blood Bowl touches down on iPad and Android tablets as a premium release, but there's a catch

Blood Bowl is a fantastic concept for a game: warring factions of races put down their swords and shields for a few hours to clobber one another in a sport that's reminiscent of American football (if American football featured magic, brutal injuries, and more than a little foul play). Originally developed as a tabletop game set in the Warhammer universe, there have been umpteen digital editions of Blood Bowl, but only now is a version headed to iPad and Android tablets. There's a Solo Player mode for quick matches, and the Campaign mode is a full tournament in which to earn experience to improve your team. If you're after some multiplayer fun times then you'll be able to play local hotse…

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen is headed to Western smartphones

During an announcement of its Gamescom line-up, Square Enix dropped a massive bomb for fans of JRPGs - Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen will be released on mobiles and tablets in the West. It's a port of the Nintendo DS remake, and includes the additional and changed content from that version, such as the extra story chapter. We're also hearing that it features quick saves, and multiple combat speed options, which will be a blessing for adventurers on the go. If you're yet to play a Dragon Quest, then this could well be a great place to start. The plot follows multiple characters from very different walks of life, as their stories all begin to weave into one another's, and this ad…

Plants Vs. Zombies 2 Dark Ages Part 2 update is blooming well out right now

If you've been fighting off the undead in Plants Vs. Zombies 2 for a while, you'll be well aware that the first part of the Dark Ages update has been out for a while, with Part 2 held tantalisingly close but just out of reach. As of today you can now grab the second part of the adventure with two decaying hands, continuing this epic quest, set in the medieval period. The free update includes 10 more levels to battle through, and two new plants added to the roster, plus an endless mode called Arthur's Challenge. New zombies complete the gruesome package: the Wizard Zombie (who does nefarious things with sheep), and the King Zombie (who transforms zombies into knights). So, AppSpies, whi…

The Sailor's Dream is the next game from developer of Year Walk and Device 6, and this is what it looks like

Simogo has announced its latest game: it's called The Sailor's Dream, and it'll be out late 2014 on iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. If you're not in the know as to who Simogo is, it's the developer of critically acclaimed iOS releases Year Walk and DEVICE 6, as well as Beat Sneak Bandit, Bumpy Road, and Kosmo Spin. We're therefore setting our bar of expectation pretty high on this one, especially after having seen the new trailer. The game is apparently "a challenge-free experience in which you explore a non-linear story through words, music, sounds and illustrations". The team's blog expands on this further;"In some ways The Sailor’s Dream is the culmination of ideas and concepts we…

Telltale confirms The Walking Dead Season 3 is on the way

Telltale has confirmed that its acclaimed interactive adventure The Walking Dead will return for a third season. The announcement was made at this year's Comic Con in San Diego, and later shared with the world via the developer's Twitter account. Given the ongoing success of the zombie-themed series, it's no surprise that Telltale is keen to continue building stories in the world of The Walking Dead. However, with the team already prepping Tales from the Borderlands and an interactive Game of Thones series for release before 2015, it's going to be a very busy year for the studio. Unfortunately, there's no word at this time whether Clementine will return in season three, or when the gam…

Marvel Contest of Champions lets you play as Deadpool, Spider-Man, Hulk and more

San Diego Comic-Con was full of big announcements for big franchises this year, such as the Angry Birds Transformers news we posted about on Friday. Over on the Marvel Video Games panel, the folks at Kabam (The Hobbit: Kingdoms of Middle-earth, Wartune, Fast and Furious 6: The Game) announced Marvel Contest of Champions, a brand new mobile game set for release on "mobile" (read: iOS and Android) in Autumn 2014. The above teaser makes the game look like a one-on-one fighting game, like Tekken or King of Fighters, but we're yet to confirm that with Kabam. We do also know that it's being made by Kabam's Vancouver studio, and that players will battle heroes and villains from the Marvel univ…

Majestic Nights: Season One is a role-playing thriller set in an alternate eighties where every conspiracy is real

Majestic Nights: Season One is a role-playing thriller set in an alternate eighties where every conspiracy is real

It's the eighties. The Berlin Wall is tumbling down, Live Aid is helping to raise money for the poor, Jason Donovan is dating Kylie Minogue, and everything is right with the world. Except that every conspiracy story ever conceived is actually true, we live in a completely fabricated illusion of what is real, and all this is perpetrated by Cardholder, an intelligence officer at a shadowy government organisation. This is the weird and wonderful world of Majestic Nights: Season One, the teaser trailer for which has just been released. Scant few details are available at the moment, but players will apparently "use wits, stealth and sometimes even a little force to investigate, explore, and…

Angry Birds Transformers trailer demonstrates why Rovio's new game will make me homeless

Angry Birds Transformers trailer demonstrates why Rovio's new game will make me homeless

If you're lucky enough to be attending San Diego Comic-Con then you might have already seen the new trailer for Angry Birds Transformers. If you're stuck at home, at school, or even worse, at work, then never fear, because you can see the new video here. The video shows off a CGI render of various Angry Birds as Transformers, running through the environment and battling piggy enemies. Astrotrain, Optimus Prime, and Megatron all make an appearance, and they seem to be fighting on the same side too, which is neat. What's not so neat is that this new trailer also shows off the new TelePods, which you'll be able to scan and subsequently bring new characters into your game. Since I'm a gigan…

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game from Combo Crew devs jump kicks its way onto iOS and Android

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game from Combo Crew devs jump kicks its way onto iOS and Android

The official game of the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie is out now on iOS and Android. While the AppSpy team isn't massively excited by the upcoming film, this video game adaptation - named, rather appropriately, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - has firmly grabbed our attention, as it's developed by the team behind Combo Crew. The game's plot - which is written by one of the authors of the comic book series - revolves around you recapturing the streets of New York City as the Turtles, playing as either Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, or Michelangelo against the evil forces of the Foot Clan. To do so you'll brawl through stage after stage of mutant goons and end-of-level bosses,…
