Acme Planetary Defense Review

Review Rustin Robinson By Dave Flodine, 3 days, 2 hours ago
Acme Planetary Defense Review

When you stop and think about it for a moment, we humans must be colossal jerks. There's really no other reason that in so many games, TV shows and movies, our homeworld is under attack by a hostile alien force. Oh sure in Acme Planetary Defense, most of your time is spent knocking asteroids out of existence, but we're pretty sure that those asteroids are being lobbed by aliens. Not only cause nuclear missiles accompany them, but sometimes they rock up to pelt us with lasers, or just to jeer ...

Pinch Peeps Review

Simple can often mean better, especially with the iPhone's unique strengths when it comes to control schemes. Pinch Peeps is not what we would call a puzzle game, but more a hand-eye coordination tool for younger gamers, where the goal is to use your thumb and finger to pair up cute and colorful creatures for your place on the high score leaderboards. There are two game modes available; timed, and endless. In timed mode the goal is to create as many pairs as fast as possible to stay t...

Cubis Creatures Review

While playing a trick on your furry friends, a spell was cast that put them all to sleep. How in the world can you wake someone up under a magic sleep spell (aside from smooching of course)? Well one way might be to complete level upon level of colored block busting action. And where does this block puzzler take place you ask? Why inside of the open mouths of our hapless sleeping victims of course. Sanitary Cubis Creatures is a variation on the match three block puzzle phenomenon. Tow...

Photon Review

[This title is the Mini-Review for the Friday News Wrap-Up for the 27th of April, 2012] I recently caught up with some of the fine lads who work with the Australian developer Valhalla Studios Bifrost and it struck me as odd that I hadn't checked out their relatively recent arcade puzzle title, Photon. Sporting a Tron-like neon visual style, the gameplay itself takes its cues from the three-match genre. The game's catch is simple - tilting can jiggle around the orbs, allowing y...

Spellsword Review

Arena platformers in the vein of games like Super Crate Box haven't been explored too extensively - sure, you can find pretenders to the throne, but there's only so much you can do with randomized weapons and raging enemies. Spellsword seeks to break from this mold, eschewing ranged weapons and mindlessly falling enemies to try something new. For the most-part, your attacks are completely melee based, placing you face-to-face with the variety of enemies that fly, bounce, drop, roll, e...

Sky Gnomes Review

Sky Gnomes Review

When one thinks of gnomes the mind often wanders to those creepy all-too-happy garden statues strewn across your neighbor's yard. Who would have thought that they were dare-devils? OK, in fantasy it's long been known that gnomes like to tinker and invent contraptions, but if we are to believe Sky Gnomes by Foursaken Media, their favorite form of entertainment is to build racing machines that allow them to plummet from the sky as fast as gnome-nly possible.Sky Gnomes is an entirely multiplayer...

MotoHeroz Review

Much like CAVE and their predictable, but almost always excellent bullet-hell shooters, RedLynx can be counted upon to add to their collection of time-trial titles. Fresh off the heels of their update to the Draw Race series, MotoHeroz is a side-on time-trial racer, but it's not entirely new for the company as it repackages a stripped down version of the Nintendo Wii title of the same name for the iOS platform. 'Stripped down' has such a nasty sound to it though and all you're likely ...

Monster Flip Review

[Monster Flip is the Mini-Review for the Friday Wrap-Up for the 9th of March, 2012] When it comes to presentation, developer PikPok doesn't mess about - 'vibrant', 'colorful' and 'exciting' are generally always applicable to their work, with some efforts (such as their work on Monsters Ate My Condo) taking things to a whole new extreme level. Despite its clean appearance, Monster Flip is no less energetic, especially once you get in to the roll of things and kick off a huge combo, com...

Friday News Wrap-Up 9 March 2012

It seems like only four days ago I was covering the news of the week in the iOS world - ahhh how time flys! Silliness aside, this does spread things a little thin and in place of any missing news I've extended our mini-review this week a little bit to compensate - it's not much, but definitely deserving of the attention.

This is the Friday News Wrap-Up for the 9th of March, 2012. Crytek Going Mobile

Developer Crytek has long been rumored to be bringing a version of their high-tech 3D CryEngine to the mobile platform, but they've been more tight-lipped about their intentions on bringing something playable to the table... that is until now. Unveiled at GDC, the... Read More

Zombie Panic in Wonderland Plus Review

While I'm inclined to enjoy the odd round of Cabal, Blood Bros. or Wild Guns, the genre of running and gunning on a single screen never really appealed - this was mostly a fault of the controls as there was no real intuitive way to pair moving your character and aiming and shooting in a seamless way. Zombie Panic in Wonderland by Akaoni Studios took a fresh stab at things on the Wii, but now the 'new and improved' Plus version is available for iOS gamers to check out. And the immediat...

Pick Up Minimalist Tunnel Racer Boost 2 For Free For A Limited Time

Minimalist tunnel racer Boost 2 is free to download from the App Store for a limited time. Launched back in 2009, Boost 2 was an early AppSpy favourite. Heck, we awarded it a 5/5 back when it was still known as Boost 3D. A few years, and several major updates later, Boost 2 features additional game modes, online multiplayer, support for Retina displays, and Game Center achievements and leaderboards. It's better than ever, in other words. And it was pretty great to begin with. Boost 2 is available to download now, and it won't cost you a penny. You'd better boost your way over to the App Store, though, as this is strictly a limited-time offer. Read More

Retro Racing Review

Retro Racing Review

It's not often that a game's title says just about everything you could hope to want to convey about a game before even loading it up. Aside from the basic top-down racing gameplay that should be familiar to just about every gamer, Amiga owners might recognize the influences from Nitro by Psygnosis - this is no mistake as the developer behind that title, Jamie Woodhouse, is also the grand designer for Retro Racing. Players are given nothing more than the ability to veer left and right...

Pinball Arcade Review

Anyone who has frequented an arcade has most likely had an encounter with a pinball machine. Part videogame with its animated scoreboard and goals, part mechanical contraption with its flippers, bumpers, ramps, and mischievous metal ball flailing around the table. They're a unique annal in the history of the arcade that at least in western countries has become a relic of the past. Enter Farsight Studios with Pinball arcade, recreating some of the most famous and popular pinball tables in the ...

Classic Dreamcast Brawler Soul Calibur Hits the App Store On 19th January

The critically acclaimed fighting game Soul Calibur will punch and kick its way onto the App Store later this week. On 19th January, to be exact. Originally released in arcades way back in 1998, it was ported to the Dreamcast the following year with updated graphics and an extra character: the villainous pirate Cervantes de Leon. Andriasang reports that all 19 fighters will be included in this forthcoming iOS port, and that it will feature six modes: Arcade Battle, Time Attack, Survival, Extra Survival, Practice, and Museum. There's no sign of the Dreamcast's expansive Mission mode, then, but Game Center leaderboard support for the Time Attack, Survival, and Extra Survival modes softens ... Read More

Cave’s Arcade Shoot-‘Em-Up Bug Princess Arrives On App Store Tomorrow

Japanese shoot-'em-up developers Cave are bringing Bug Princess to the App Store tomorrow. Originally released in 2004 as Mushihimesama in Japan, this insect-themed shooter has been updated and optimised for the iPhone's touchscreen, while support for Game Center and OpenFeint means that you can compete for leaderboard dominance. Like Cave's other releases, Bug Princess's manic bullet-hell gameplay may not be for the faint of heart. Cave's previous efforts - ESPGALUDA II and Mushihimesama BUG PANIC - both scored a perfect 5/5 on AppSpy, however, so the company's reputation for delivering high-quality hardcore shmups precedes them. Bug Princess is already out on New Zealand's App Store, s... Read More
