PROS

A lot of options available for your army and upgrades.
Having each unit have a special move gives a more personal level of control over the battle.

CONS

Like most games in this genre, sheer numbers can win every level.
Constant dialogue scenes impeded gameplay.

VERDICT

A head-to-head castle defense game with a lot of unit options, RPG upgrade mechanics, hack and slash segments, and plenty of modes. The long standing issues of the genre are not addressed here, but fans should be more than happy.

Fans of Liv Games' previous head-to-head castle defense amalgamation Legendary Wars, should be happy about the release of Monster Wars. Less a sequel, and more a companion piece, in this title you take control of the monsters that have been slayed en masse in not only games of this genre but pretty much every fantasy game out there. It's time for revenge!

While the majority of the gameplay is your standard castle vs castle game, there is more to think about than which low cost monster to spam over and over again till you overwhelm the enemy's defenses and win through attrition. Both the monsters available to you and the monsters that collect your currency for battle can be upgraded between levels. New creatures can be unlocked with gems and upgrade tokens, and once at max level, monsters can evolve into even greater forms. Not only that but out on the battlefield each unit has a special move that gives the game a greater sense of customization when you're choosing which small band of monsters you'd like to take into the next battle.

Aside from this there are small beat em up segments where you control one unit as you fulfill an objective. The controls for these segments are the same as the castle vs castle segments. Tapping a monster will give you control of them. Tapping anywhere on screen will move the monster to that location (although there are automated controls to send monsters moving forward in specific lanes, attacking anything that gets in their path). The aforementioned special attack is activated by a button in the bottom right, and as a castle battle is going on, the gems your minions collect to fund the war effort need to be tapped on to be collected, otherwise they get deposited in your castle's bank. Good for upgrades, but it doesn't help you then and there.

At its heart this is classic head-to-head castle defense. Fans of the genre will enjoy this title for all the choices it offers and the berth of content, while other gamers might enjoy the crisp cartoon visuals and ability to just spam your way to victory. Liv games are on their way to becoming a force in the genre.
