'74-Days Of The Smartphone' or 'Just How Well Did They Sell?'

By , on March 17, 2010

So which smartphone is leading the market? Just how do you judge who's "winning" in this competitive mobile-gadget arena? After compiling sales for the first 74 days of each major smartphone's release, mobile phone analysis firm Flurry has revealed that the Droid sold 50,000 more units than the iPhone in the same period.

Flurry blogger Peter Farago provides some insight as to how Motorola might have managed to eke out more sales than Apple for their product (incidentally, 74 days is how long it took Apple to reach 1 million sales from the the iPhone 1G's launch).

"Motorola Droid launched over 2.5 years after the iPhone 1G. (Nov 2009 vs. July 2007). When the iPhone launched, consumers' concept of a mobile computing device as we now understand it, was very different."

Farago also goes on to also explain that by launching the product on Verizon and just before the Christmas period, Motorola could have squeezed out more sales thanks to a larger subscription base than the iPhone's AT&T and holiday sales.

Mobile phone analysis firm Flurry tracked sales through the use of an embedded application in many available Apps, with around 80% of all iPhone and Android OS's currently providing data for the company.

Motorola has certainly worked for their sales and it shows in the figures, but sadly Google's Nexus One hasn't quite performed to expectations with only around 135k sales during a similar period (Flurry's final numbers will be tallied on Friday 19th March).

It'll be interesting to see how many developers shift gears to support both the Droid and iPhone over the coming year, but after a thrashing like this Google might just have to reconsider its priorities and stick to platform development for now.
