SmashMouth Games gives us a chance to check out their upcoming rhythm title based on the Weebl's-Stuff universe.
Russian Dancing Men is scheduled for release on Thursday, 27th October, 2011.
Saying 'I like the videos at Weebl's-Stuff' is like saying 'I like funny things on the Internet' - it's hard not to have come across one or two of the cartoons with their catchy songs built around abstract humor. To be honest I hadn't even considered the idea of such a site ending up with an iOS title, but SmashMouth Games has not only turned the animations of Weebl in to a game, they've done it in an ingenious way.
If you haven't heard of songs like Badgers, Magical Trevor, and Kenya I'd heartily recommend you seek them out on Weebl's site. Now that you're back we can jump back in to the Hands-On as you take control of a line of dancing Russian men (yes, just like the song) as they venture through the Weebl universe in search of food.
Ultimately the game is a rhythm title, with various hazards needing to be negotiated by tapping a combination of one or two buttons from the four that are on screen. Their appearance may seem a bit odd, but their designs aren't a mistake as the two buttons on the left indicate hazards that are above or below the men, while the buttons on the right indicate two kinds of traps (spikes and loops). The combinations are somewhat limited, though identifying the correct one from the eight possible key presses can be difficult once a song starts to pick up.
There are currently nine tracks available, with classics like Badgers, Amazing Horse, and Narwhals included in the line-up. The songs themselves are remixes designed to suit the game's longer levels, though the mixes themselves can be a bit odd as slow-downs occur at seemingly random points. Whether this is a performance issue or a built in feature is yet to be worked out.
So there you have it - Dancing Russian Men will be out this week on the 27th of October and if you're a fan of rhythm games and Weebl's cartoons I'd definitely check it out. For those after a more in-depth look at the game, keep your eyes peeled for our review after the release.
