New Month, New Season, Top Games - Have Your Say

Depending on where you happen to be located, June means Winter or Summer - in either case there's one constant... top games of the month! Whether you're finishing up exams, grafting away at your job or taking a break from it all, handheld gaming can be a great way to blast through a few spare moments to perk up the day. I get the privilege on an almost daily basis, but how about you? What games have caught your interest over the last month? Is it something new? Something old? Have you strayed from the App Store path or did you struggle to connect to anything during May? While I work on AppSpy's Top 3 for May, have your say in the comments! Title image courtesy of L. Retro Games Unleash Velocispider On iOS Population

In Retro Dreamer's Velocispider (its non-spritual successor to the fabulous match-three puzzler Linkoidz) you play a half-spider, half-velociraptor, err, thing. Yes, i know. Strangely, though, whatever skills you might presume this kind of mutant would possess are academic, since our hybrid hero elects to protect its eggs from a group of alien invaders with an armoury of shoulder-mounted laser guns. Control of your mutated creature is tilt-based, with firing automatic whenever you have a foe in your sights. Power-ups rain down from defeated enemies in the shape of faster fire, double fire, three-way fire, while Game Center support is included for when you go postal on the invading popula…

Speedball 2 Evolution Free For One Day

As part of the FreeAppADay initiative, Bitmap Bros.'s iOS remake of their brutal classic Speedball 2 Evolution is free for one day only. That is, today! The FreeAppADay app lets users wish for any popular paid app to become free for 24 hours. So, if futuristic, extreme, team-based sports are your thing, thank your lucky FreeAppADay stars and get downloading. A few months ago on review, we commented that 'despite having 20 years under its belt, Speedball 2 Evolution still feels as fun as it ever did.' Andrew thus saw fit to throw Speedball 2 Evolution a 4 (out of 5) rating...and that was when we were paying for the privilege.…

The Heist Review

The Heist Review

The App Store is no stranger to puzzle collections; it's an easy way to output content without a lot of effort. So when you come across a game like The Heist by tap tap tap, it's difficult to remain cynical as you realize you've jumped down the rabbit hole and you're enjoying every minute of its maddening puzzles. What makes this game so intriguing is how quickly it manages to invest players in something as obtuse as solving puzzles to crack open a safe. You're given little motivation…

In Case of Fire Review

As game types go, the 'puzzle platformer' is often an odd one to deal with as the amount of variation is limited only by how you want to tackle the 'puzzle' part of the equation. While it's possible to add challenges based around logic, attempting to crack the precise sequence of actions required to pass a screen can be just as difficult to overcome. In Case Of Fire (ICOF) by Coin Bump takes the second route as players attempt to rescue someone from a burning building by avoiding the f…

Tackle A Pop-Infused Zombie Apocalypse In Save Toshi 2

Tackle A Pop-Infused Zombie Apocalypse In Save Toshi 2

If only some otherworldly demonic force would burst through the earth's crust and drag some of the tepid, lifeless, manufactured popstar pap away from our screens, newspapers, and lives... Perhaps thoughts like this were going through the team at Nitako's collective minds as they sat down to discuss the plotline of their latest outing - and sequel to Save Toshi - Popstar Physics. Demons have kidnapped cutesy anime popstar Toshi, and without her devil-slaying dance powers to protect the world, a zombie apocalypse has ensued. Popstar Physics unsurprisingly serves up more of the same Save Toshi-style action: you're tasked with shooting balls around to destroy zombie clones of the unfortunate…

Demolition Dash Free Review

Sometimes it's easy to pre-judge and potentially dismiss a game just because it doesn't 'look good', but there's an evil flip-side to this kind of thinking that results in 'style over substance'. Demolition Dash by dreamfab is a visually impressive title that packages the basic gameplay of an endless platformer with visual flair, but it all feels skin deep. Now and then gamers get the opportunity to wreak havoc in a city ala Godzilla, but in Demolition Dash things are scaled back - a…

Slug Bugs Review

Slug Bugs Review

I'd be surprised if you haven't played 'Punch Buggy' at least once in your life, be it seriously as a kid or for a laugh as a teen or an adult. If you're not familiar with the children's game, the basic idea is to punch someone's arm on sighting a VW Beetle while saying 'Punch Buggy!'. There are variants, but it's a fun (if painful) way to pass time on long road trips. Slug Bugs by 'Action = Reaction Labs' converts the kid's classic in to a whack-a-mole style game, but with an interest…

NaturalMotion's Icebreaker Slashes Onto iPhone On 2nd June

NaturalMotion's Icebreaker Slashes Onto iPhone On 2nd June

The release of Icebreaker, NaturalMotion's explosive new ice hockey sim, has been, wait for it...put on ice until next week. NaturalMotion's previous title Backbreaker Football cut away all of the fluff associated with gridiron to focus purely on the art of tackling. In doing so, Backbreaker Football picked up a 5/5 from AppSpy and sold 3 million copies. NaturalMotion will be looking to emulate that success with Icebreaker, where the overriding principle remains roughly the same: race from one end of the rink to the other, evade several opponents, and blast the puck into the unwitting goal. You can spin and dodge along the icy gauntlet, with more advanced techniques for scoring becoming…

Tower Defense® Review

It's hard not to be impressed by the courage displayed by Com2US with regards to their latest video game release. After sitting on the trademark of 'Tower Defense' for almost three years, the company has finally released what they claim to be 'THE TOWER DEFENSE'. This sets the mark pretty high for 'Tower Defense®: Lost Earth' considering the amount of great TDs already on offer and the only burning question that needs to be answered is, 'Does it live up to these expectations?'. In…

House of Mice Review

Have you ever wondered what M.A.D. Cat from Inspector Gadget does in his spare time? Other than being petted by Dr. Claw that is. It seems he gets up to trouble with the local mice who have come to the conclusion that they can defeat their feline foe by rolling up and exploding like miniature bombs. In House of Mice by Delusion Studio you'll need to direct these furry packages of doom towards the smug cat that taunts them from afar. Ok, so it's not actually M.A.D. Cat, but more of a c…

Stunning Tower Defence Game Sentinel 3: Homeworld Gets Update

Origin8's visually striking tower defence game Sentinel 3: Homeworld has been given new DLC, an update, and a celebratory 80% price slash. Yipppee!! The fresh downloadable content includes 15 new campaign levels across 15 new maps, with the first two of each free for those of us lucky enough to already own this 5-star game. New weapons such as the Vortex and Turret Energizer Sentinel are available after the update, alongside the Energy Syphon, which satisfyingly converts kills into ship energy. Toss in six new challenge modes and that price cut to 99c is starting to look like a real bargain. Don't dally, though: the sale is only on until 30th May, so space cadets should get their boots…

Current Review

We've all played one game or another within the 'three-match' genre, be it something as iconic as Bejewelled or a little more abstract like Puzzle Bobble and their popularity resulted in the App Store (over)reacting accordingly. Over time the flood of copy-cats reached an equilibrium, leaving only the giants of the App Store as they stood on the backs of those who perished. The unique way in which these games explored a simple concept helped to contribute to their survival and Current…

Demolition Dash On App Store Now For 99c

Anyone with a interest in destroying everything in sight will be pleased to read that Demolition Dash is now available on iPhone. The anti-hero of Chimera Entertainment's is Zilla, a little tyke who must run, jump, and pummel through eight cities and 24 stages to complete his rampaging mission. Demolition Dash looks like it could be a helluva lot of fun, with Game Center achievements boosting its replayability and additional game modes promised by the developers in future updates. Release some of that pent-up anger and frustration via Demolition Dash at the introductory price of 99c. You'll feel so much better for it!…

Prose With Bros Now With Added Banter

Prose With Bros Now With Added Banter

iOS insult-'em-up Prose with Bros has just received an update including a new word pack, tweaked sentence creation, and some bug fixes. Previously, stringing together random words to make ridiculously convoluted sentences and then having them rated for awesomeness over 24 hours had been a stop / start experience, with bugs rife throughout. No more. The developers Evil Laugh Games have bestowed upon us 300 more words (on top of the 1100 aready available) with which players can banter their way into nonsensical sentence creation infamy. Besides that, the buggy word-dragging feature has been oiled up a bit, preventing words getting stuck on screen. Hopefully, wordsmiths won't find as m…
