Play Sigils of Elohim now, unlock doodads in The Talos Principle later

Croteam has a new title for PCs (and maybe mobiles) on the way, called The Talos Principle. It's described as a "philosophical first person puzzle game" and looks like a cross between Myst, Portal, and Gone Home. It's not out for a while, but to get you in the mood there's a free prequel that's just been released for iOS and Android (and PC, Mac, and Linux). Sigils of Elohim is its name: a puzzle game where completing its various challenges will unlock special items in The Talos Principle. The first part of Sigils of Elohim is out now, with further updates planned before the release of The Talos Principle. [App Store link][Google Play link]…

Hands-on with Skater, the simulation skateboarding game vying for Touchgrind and True Skate's crown

Touchgrind Skate 2, True Skate, and now Skater: the world of mobile games isn't exactly lacking simulation skateboarding games, and I for one am very pleased. I'm a big fan of the two former titles, and I've now spent a fair chunk of time with Skater to see how it compares to the other two giants of the genre. Take a look.…

Hands-on with Darklings: Season 2, the adorable swipe-based puzzle combat sequel

We've just gotten our hands on an exclusive build of Darklings: Season 2, so naturally we wanted to bring you a sneak peek at how the game's shaping up. If you're yet to play the original, this new game is an action puzzler in which you need to copy the patterns of white atop your enemy's head by swiping them as commands into the touchscreen. This then destroys them, and the stars they release give you more time. It's cute, it's fun, and there's a fair amount to unlock from what I've seen so far.…

Banner Saga Review

It's been out on PC for a while, but viking epic The Banner Saga has finally made the trek onto iOS. It's an unforgiving tale of warring factions and ancient evils, played out via choose-your-own-adventure style choices and isometric strategy combat. Pocket Gamer's Jon Munday rose to the game's many challenges, and reveals his opinion in the video above.…

Butters from South Park is getting his very own pinball game, courtesy of Zen Studios

South Park: Super-Sweet Pinball, and South Park: Butters' Very Own Pinball Game are new South Park-themed tables coming to Zen Pinball shortly. South Park: Super-Sweet Pinball follows the pinball exploits of Cartman, Kenny, Stan and Kyle, and references various episodes of the TV series along the way. But the real news here is that literally everyone's favourite cartoon character - Butters Stotch - will also be receiving a table of his very own, appropriately titled South Park: Butters' Very Own Pinball Game. South Park Pinball will be released this week on iOS and Android (plus PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, PS Vita, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PC and Mac), and costs $3.99 / £2.49 as a st…

Hands-on with Find the Line, a wonderfully artistic puzzler almost ruined by ads

It breaks your heart when you play a game that comes so close to being amazing, only to have one aspect of it ruin the experience. In the case of Find the Line, it's the video ads: they demolish the peace and thoughtful elegance of this otherwise beautiful puzzle experience. You'll see exactly what I mean in my hands-on video below.…

Final Fantasy VI Symphonic Poem is 20 minutes of orchestral awesome

"The music of Nobuo Uematsu remains as powerful and as moving today as it did when we first heard it 20 years ago" - that's what producer Thomas Böcker said of the Final Fantasy composer's oeuvre, and I think you'd be hard pushed to disagree. So you should definitely spend part of today watching the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra cracking through 20 minutes of Final Fantasy VI's score, as part of its anniversary celebrations. To do so, all you need to do is click this link right here, and you'll be transported to the RSPO's official website. Have patience though: the video's worth watching, but the site itself is antiquated, taking approximately 1 billion years to load anythin…

Learn how to play Monster Hunter Freedom Unite with AppSpy - Part 14

I was off for this episode of our Let's Play / Tutorial / Faffing About series focused on Monster Hunter Freedom Unite for iOS. I feel like I missed out. Stupid birthdays. James and Danny go out looking for monsters, and they're quickly joined by two of AppSpy's community for a whole heap of hunting hijinks. Need to catch up with the series? You can! So do.…

Hands-on with Boulder Dash 30th Anniversary, the rock-pushing, cave diving platformer

After 30 years of pushing massive rocks around undergroud caverns, you'd think Boulder Dash's spelunking hero Rockford might be ready to put his muddy feet up and take a well deserved break. Unfortunately for him, Boulder Dash 30th Anniversary is due to come out on iPhone and iPad in the not-too distant future. Peter's gone hands-on with the early build, and has been putting the 21st century Rockford through his paces. See the results in the video above.…

Hands-on with Grave Matters, the rusty puzzler in which you dig for dead robots

Philip K. Dick once asked if androids dream of electric sheep. We cannot answer that question. However, if new macabre puzzler Grave Matters has its facts straight, they do play Minesweeper with the rusted carcasses of their dead robot mates. Intruiged? Then we suggest you hit play on the video above.…

Surviving in Minecraft: Pocket Edition, Episode 7 - Rearing Sheep

The plan for this episode of our Let's Play of Minecraft: Pocket Edition was to keep digging and digging and digging into the ground until I found something amazing... or in the very least a different type of building material to the ones I've already found. That didn't quite go to plan, but I did make a very deep, very long hole in the ground, with some very nice stairs leading all the way down. On top of that I decided to see what else I could create with the materials I'd already gathered. I make all sorts of awesome tools in this episode, and also a complete failure of a sheep pen. Also: hot duck action. Missed out on previous episodes? Catch up via our Playlist on YouTube.…

Genre Busters: top 5 best Radiangames games

As we discussed on the stream, both James and I are big fans of the Radiangames catalogue. Intense arcade-oriented blasters and puzzlers are the order of the day, usually with a liberal helping of vivid neon and huge explosions. We decided to take a long look at the oeuvre, and bring you our five favourites. If you haven't got an hour to watch the stream replay, never fear: you can jump to the games instantly via the links below... 1. Inferno 22. Crush!3. JoyJoy4. Super Crossfighter5. Fluid SE…

Hands-on with Reckless Racing 3, the souped-up sequel with pirouetting big rigs

If you're a fan of top-down racing in the vein of 16-bit classics like Micro Machines, then the Reckless Racing series has always been something of a shining light on iOS. It successfully marries the good looks of a quasi-realistic racing game with the crazy drifting and arcade fun of more outlandish titles like Outrun. Yesterday, Reckless Racing 3 skidded onto iPhone and iPad everywhere. The question is, has the wheel screeching carnage of previous games made its way into this newest installment? Watch the video above to find out.…

PBR: Raging Bulls is the official bull riding game of the Professional Bull Riders organization, out soon on your iOS device

TIL: that there's an organization that presides over bull riding, and it's called PBR, and it has an arcade-oriented game coming out on iOS in which you ride a variety of absurd types of bull. It's called PBR: Raging Bulls, and the trailer shows off some of its different bull types, including robot bulls that teleport, dragon bulls that fly through the air, British pilot bulls with handsome moustaches, and so on. Here's the trailer, it looks ace.…
