FOTONICA Review

Review Santa Ragione s.r.l. By James Gilmour, 9 years, 6 months ago
FOTONICA Review

Fotonica is an endless-runner. There, I said it. But it's also much, much more than that. It's an ode to '80s vector art. It's a mobile Mirror's Edge. It's an artsy speed sim set to by a throbbing, experimental soundscape. And, though not without issues, it's also a lot of fun, as Pocket Gamer's Craig Grannell found during his review. Watch the video above to hear the full review. Read the review transcript over on Pocket Gamer.…

Five Nights at Freddy's Review

Five Nights at Freddy's is a weird game.  Cast as a night watchman, your job is to man the security desk at a children's restaurant. During the day, kids come to eat and be entertainent by the eatery's collection of animatronic animals, who laugh and dance and play with the squealing brats until closing time. At night, however, these souless automatons stalk the corridors of the building, looking for humans to stuff into bear suits.  It's your job to keep the building safe…

Valiant Hearts: The Great War Review

Valiant Hearts: The Great War Review

While it's fair to say that World War II has been covered from every possible angle in the gaming world, the First World War is comparatively under represented. Valiant Hearts: The Great War not only focuses on the first major global conflict of the 20th century, but does so in a far more subtle and nuanced way than your average military shooter. As Pocket Gamer's Jon Munday discovered, this point-and-click adventure uses both humour and solemnity to tell its story, a combination tha…

Modern Combat, Infinity Blade, King of Fighters, and more going cheap in first wave of App Store bundles

Modern Combat, Infinity Blade, King of Fighters, and more going cheap in first wave of App Store bundles

Everyone loves a bargain, and things don't get much more bargainous than premium mobile games getting bundled up into one big package of awesomeness. Happily the App Store now gives developers and publishers the option to bundle their games together for a price that's much lower than buying all the titles individually. The launch wave of bundles is epic. Modern Combat 3, 4, and 5 for just £6.99, £1.49 will bag you Angry Birds, plus Seasons, Space, and Star Wars, and SNK is doing a mega deal that includes Metal Slug 1, 2, 3, and X, together with The King of Fighters-i, '97, and '98, plus Samurai Shodown II for a measly £9.99. Did we mention there's also Infinity Blade,…

Hands-on with Dragon Quest, the JRPG masterpiece, rejuvenated

Originally released on the Famicom back in the mid-eighties, Dragon Quest is about as “classic” as classic JRPGs get. Koichi Nakamura, Koichi Sugiyama, Yuji Horii, and Akira Toriyama all collaborated on this genre defining first entry in the series, laying the groundwork for decades to come. It's now available on iOS and Android, so I've grabbed a code to show you the very early moments of the game, to give you a sense of how the game plays.…

EXCLUSIVE: iBomber 3 teaser trailer points to Metal support on iOS 8

iBomber was never a slouch in the visuals department, even back when it dropped its first payload 5 years ago, but iBomber 3 could well be a massive step forward for the series. We've just received the very first (and crushingly short) teaser trailer for the newly announced title... The eagle-eyed will spot that the logo now contains a metal texture, and the song playing in the background is classic metal track 'Ace of Spades' by Motörhead. I've confirmed with the developer - Cobra Mobile - that this teaser is indeed a nod to Apple's new Metal on iOS 8, functionality that should make games look even more impressive on iPhone and iPad. Could iBomber 3 have drastically improved visu…

Hands-on with RGB Express, a tiny little delivery of puzzling loveliness

Here's the deal: you have various coloured trucks, and each needs to pick up a parcel and deliver it to its destination. The truck can't double back on itself, and if you collide two trucks together then... well... you don't want that. RGB Express is cute and dinky and delightful, and it's just the right level of challenge to keep you thinking and experimenting, without frustrating. Here's my hands-on with the game.…

CounterSpy™ Review

Whether you're crawing around under a cardbox box in Metal Gear Solid, or straddling a hallway while an unsuspecting guard strolls beneath your crotch in Splinter Cell, there's nothing quite like a good stealth game. Counterspy is a cartoon love letter to espionage thrillers and cold war unease. This side-scrolling roguelike casts you as a secret agent trying to infiltrate a military base and prevent the imminent launch of a Soviet nuke. As Pocket Gamer's Giles Armstrong found, the i…

Gemini Strike Review

Gemini Strike Review

While developer Cave has got the vertically-scrolling shooter market pretty much sewn up, games like Dodonpachi come with a fairly stiff price tag. Enter Gemini Stike, an arcade-inspired blaster with lots of lasers, big bosses, but zero barrier to entry. But can a free-to-play shmup really hold its own against the premium powerhouses already available on iOS? Jon Munday from Pocket Gamer thinks shooter fans may find room in their heart for Gemini Stike's old-skool charms, albeit with…

Battle Riders Review

Racing sims can be a bit clinical. You'll often get endless menus filled with gear ratio sliders and engine tuning options, when all you really want to do is slam your figurative foot to the floor and burn some rubber. Battle Riders is an antidote to the serious-headed racers of the world, so much so that the Deathrace 3000-inspired vehicles you drive also have massive guns slapped on the side of them.  Question is, does it deliver the high octane, armour plated goods? Watch the…

Surviving in Minecraft: Pocket Edition, Episode 4 - Shining Light

In the latest episode of my journeys through the lands of Minecraft: PE, I begin fortifying my home from attacks by exploding cactus things, simply by using torches. There's also a moment when I try to tickle a wolf with a feather in order to make it like me, and I begin journeying even further into the newly-discovered underground cave. Plus: physics?…

Hands-on with Spider-Man Unlimited, in which Spidey turns his hand to auto-running

Peter Parker is a beloved Marvel character, and he and his alter ego Spider-Man, are a source of inspiration to many people, young and old. They certainly are to me. So it's with a little sadness I have to report that my small amount of time with Spider-Man Unlimited has found it to be a fairly by-the-numbers auto-runner with combat elements. It's got some neat stuff packed away in there though, which I'll show you in my hands-on video below.…

Awesome! There's a new illo - Birth of the Cool trailer

illo - Birth of the Cool is shaping up to be... well... pretty cool. It's a non-violent adventure game with action and puzzle elements from Raylight Games, where you'll be controlling the eponymous hero using touch, tilt, and microphone inputs, to navigate them through beguilingly stark worlds in a strange and unique narrative that's told completely without words. As you'll see in the trailer, there's a rewind mechanic in there just in case you make a mistake, the puzzles look left-field and off-kilter, and the visuals are stripped right back to the (still gorgeous) fundamentals. We're keen to see how illo - Birth of the Cool turns out when it comes to iOS and Android (and PSN, XBLA, Wi…
