AppSpy Plays: Battleheart Legacy, live on Twitch! (5pm UK | 9am Pacific | 12 noon Eastern)

Just in case our video review of Battleheart Legacy last week wasn't enough to help you decide on picking up Battleheart Legacy, we'll be playing it as part of our regular Twitch broadcasting. Our Alex called the game an "attractive, fully-featured action-RPG with elegant controls, let down only by its slightly laborious combat system." If you have already bought it, fret not - we still need you to come along and point our James in the right direction! Give us your best hints, tips, and techniques so that we can storm through the session for our onlookers. The stream starts over on our Twitch channel at 5pm UK / 9am Pacific / 12 noon Eastern, but we'll have a short little natter with…

Kiwanuka Review

Kiwanuka Review

Kiwanuka's title screen, with its beautiful geometric visual design and psychedelic soundtrack, sets the tone for the levels to follow. What isn’t immediately apparent is that this charming puzzler is built on a single, elegant gameplay mechanic that perhaps doesn't offer enough depth to support the weight of an entire game. Cast in the role of a tiny wizard, you must use your magic to escort a host of followers across a series of 2D levels. Touching anywhere on the screen produ…

Act 1 of Double Fine’s point-and-click adventure Broken Age is finally on its way to the App Store. It was over two years ago that Double Fine took to Kickstarter to launch Broken Age, then titled Double Fine Adventure. After smashing its $400,000 goal, the first development update announced that the game would also be coming for iOS.  Now, six months after the game was launched on PC for backers, Double Fine has announced that the iPad version of Broken Age Act 1 is “in the final stretch” and should be in our hands in “a matter of weeks." Broken Age tells the story of two characters: a boy trapped on a spaceship by an overbearing AI guardian,…

Free vertical shooter Final Flight of the Perseus gets new Expert Mode

Final Flight of the Perseus is a vertical shmup developed by Third Party Ninjas. Despite already being free, the team has clearly decided that it wasn't offering enough value, and has just added a new Expert Mode. The wave-based shump offers short bursts of icreasingly challenging sci-fi combat. Every enemy killed earns you in-game cash, which you can then spend on upgrades to power up your cannons, or to replenish your shields. As any good star pilot will tell you, dropping to zero shields in Final Flight of the Perseus is dangerous. This is where the new Expert Mode comes in, encouraging you to flight in this prone state to earn double cash rewards. Resist the urge to power up yo…

Genre Busters: Console Calamities - live on Twitch (5pm UK | 9am Pacific | 12 noon Eastern)

Over here at AppSpy we like to start the week just like all the other whippersnappers our age. Lists, and plenty of 'em! And boy, do we have a list show on our Twitch channel for you today. Genre Busters: Console Calamities will be exploring the grimey underbelly of misled publishers and developers who sold their soul for a quick buck - trashy titles with the names of beloved console properties emblazoned across them. Whether they're riddled with IAP jiggery-pokery, flawed controls, and / or just downright dreadful intrusive ads, we're going to name and shame them. We want to know which you've been most disgusted by. If you have played any of these games, there's a good chance you will ne…

See exclusive hands-on footage of Modern Combat 5: Blackout

If you're a first-person shooter fan, then you've probably been keeping a close eye on the development of Gameloft's guntastic sequel Modern Combat 5. We've covered the game's new character classes and XP leveling system. We also touched upon the new Squad vs Squad multiplayer mode, which lets you create and customise your very own platoon from your friends list. However, up until now we've only seen snippets of the game in action.  Handily, our pals over at Pocket Gamer recently spent a day with the folks at Gameloft, and went hands-on with the game itself. They even had the presence of mind to grab some video evidence of the game in action. Here is that video:…

Drawn to Life Review

Drawn to Life was a originally released back in 2007 on DS. It was based around the tantalising idea of letting you draw characters and items directly into a game world. Seven years on, the game has now made its way on to the App Store. All this port delivers, however, is proof that some things are best left in the past. Despite the fact that creation is the the game's main hook, it is a limited mechanic. Each of your creations must conform to a specific size and shape, limiting your…

Creature-battler Outernauts: Monster Battle has just gone global on iPhone and iPad

Having been in soft launch for several weeks, Insomniac's free-to-play creature-catcher Outernauts: Monster Battle has been launched worldwide on iPhone and iPad. As with so many creature-fight simulators, you must gather all kinds of bizarre beasts to battle for you in your quest to become number one on PETA’s most wanted list. Outernauts does offer a few twists on the classic formula, however, with its strategic combat far more rapid than similar titles. The game’s social aspects also do a lot to set it apart. PvP arena’s let you battle other players online, pitting your collection of handdrawn monsters against theirs. Online leaderboards ensure you can quantifiably…

Eerily beautiful iOS point-and-click adventure Pinstripe is nearing completion

Posthumous point-and-click platforming adventure Pinstripe is nearly ready to hit iPhone and iPad. Pinstripe's gameplay mixes side-scrolling platforming with classic adventure game puzzles. Taking control of a dead man in search of his wife in the afterlife, you must solve all manner of problems to progress, with only a shotgun and a little grey dog to help. The good news is that according to developer Thomas Brush, "after almost 3 years, Pinstripe is almost playable in its entirety."  The game is brought to life by Brush's stunning, eerie art, and is populated by a colourful cast of characters, each with their own tales to tale. After nearly three years in development we are exci…

Battleheart Legacy Review

Battleheart Legacy Review

RPG control systems can be complex. It's impressive, then, to find an RPG title as fully featured as Battleheart Legacy that that lets you access its vast range of mechanics with simple, single taps. Its a good thing the controls are so intuitive, too, because the game offers little in the way of a tutorial. You are shown the basics of how to navigate the world and defend yourself. Touching anywhere on screen will set you on your way, while tapping on an enemy will allow you lock-on a…

Penultimate episode of The Wolf Among Us out now on iPhone and iPad

The fourth episode of Telltale's The Wolf Among Us is out now on the App Store for iPhone and iPad. As his investigation into Fabletown's secrets begins to draw to a close, Bigsby Wolf is struggling to keep it together, with the bottle on his desk growning increasingly empty, and his inner beast increasingly eager to make itself known. As usual, you should expect your choices to change the story as you cajole, press, and outright terrify the other Fables into coughing up their secrets as you chase down the conspiracy. In Sheep's Clothing is free for Season Pass holders, but will otherwise cost the usual £2.99 / $4.99. It's available via and in-app purchase right now.…

Genre Busters: Our Top 4 Hackers (Twitch catch-up)

As part of our regular programming over on our Twitch channel, we look at some of the best games that we feel define a specific genre in Genre Busters. With Watch_Dogs dominating the multiplatform charts this week, we decided to focus on games which have you hacking, or indeed cracking, as an integral part of the game. A genre we call hackers, although our Twitch viewers have come penned an even better name for the genre - hacktastic games! We started the show with a quick demonstration of Watch_Dogs Companion: ctOS Mobile, which allows iPhone and iPad users to infiltrate their friends' games and send the feds after them. Uplay has been inundated with folks trying to play this mode, b…

Gameloft reveals Modern Combat 5: Blackout’s Squad vs Squad multiplayer mode

Gameloft has just revealed its new Squad vs Squad multiplayer mode for upcomin shooter sequel Modern Combat 5: Blackout. Squad vs Squad is a new take on Modern Combat’s multiplayer, allowing you to form persistent teams with friends. Offering a similar experience to the standard multiplayer, you will still be able to take part in Capture the Flag, VIP, Free for All, and Team Battles. The difference is that you'll no longer be placed in random squads. Instead, you'll be able select your own teammates from your friends list, and cherry pick your perfect platoon of ultimate badasses. The various classes the game offers will allow for plenty of diversity between squads. This will l…
