TABLE TOP RACING Review
When reviewing a title I often come across an internal dialogue in the form of a line of questioning that ends up sounding a little like this: "Where's all the depth? Shouldn't there be more stuff I can do?", "Does it matter? Are you having fun?", "Actually I am, but I'm afraid it won't last". For a game sporting as little as 8 stages and 10 vehicles, you'd think the fun would quickly run out, but Playrise Edge have nailed Table Top Racing's 'Kart' gameplay so perfectly that it's hard…

Stratosphere - Competitive iPad Tower Defense
It may be the multiplayer component, it may be the minimalist look of the game... chances are it's the great pun for their title that got me interested. Using the larger play area of the iPad, players try to keep their opponent's armies at bay. As a TD game, it doesn't look like it does much new, but the local multiplayer aspect more than makes it worth a view of the trailer. It releases this Thursday.…
Table Top Racing out this Thursday
Watching this trailer, I get flashbacks to my youth and possibly too much time spent with Micro Machines 2: Turbo by Codemasters. Table Top Racing seems to capture a similar feel, but imbues it with a lot of the tropes of more modern kart racers. Not too surprising seeing that the designer was apparently one of the co-creators of the original Wipeout. Have a look at the trailer for yourselves, and if you like what you see, Thursday is not too far away at all.…

Terminal Escape Review
In the last year or so, there's been an increasing number of games about airport scanners and airport security. Poking fun at the inconvenience and craziness of modern airport security measures can make for enjoyable play, especially if you take the current measures of the industry to a ridiculous conclusion of a Temple Run-esque gauntlet that needs to be overcome before you can reach your terminal. Terminal Escape does exactly that through short levels where obstacles need to be avoid…

Glu releases Gun Bros 2 trailer
It's been more than two years since the first Gun Bros came out, which is a lifetime in the smartphone and tablet gaming world. Let's put it this way, when Gun Bros came out, Infinity Blade was still a month away and people were being charmed by how shiny their first generation iPad looked. Gun Bros 2 has actually been around for a couple of months now, albeit in beta form and only available from the Canadian App Store, but a trailer released by Glu today suggests that a global release isn't too far away. There's no gameplay footage to speak of, but according to the Canadian App Store you can expect vehicle rampages, plenty of guns, exotic locations, and plenty of evil scum bags to riddle…

Heroes and Castles Review
The castle defense genre along with its sister, the tower defense genre was one of the first big run-away hits on the iOS, thanks to the popularity of games like Knights on-rush. Heroes and Castles is cut from the same cloth, but like a lot of popular PC defense titles released in the last couple years, it has understood that gameplay can be a lot more exciting if the player is getting down and dirty alongside all its units and towers. That is the crux of the gameplay here as you pick…

Gameloft releases new Blitz Brigade trailer
There aren't that many multiplayer shooters for your iOS device, and those that there are often have a few problems that keep them from being as enjoyable as they should be. It looks like Gameloft is trying to fix that with Blitz Brigade. The game owes more than a little to Battlefield Heroes and Team Fortress 2, although if you're going to borrow ideas from cartoon style multiplayer blasters, you may as well choose two of the best. Set during an alternate World War 2, the game is all about picking a class and doing as much damage as you can to the opposing team. The classes you can play as all look pretty standard, from the muscular, heavy weapon toting brute to the lithe, sneaky sniper,…
Year Walk might come out in February
"Have you ever been lost in the forest, and you realise that you are walking in circles? That is a scary and confusing feeling. We have tried to capture that feeling in this game." Year Walk by Simogo, the developer behind Beat Sneak Bandit, has been on our most wanted list ever since it was first announced. With its creepy, atmospheric trailers and mysterious teases, we could spend hours speculating about the game. Thankfully it looks like we're not going to have to do that for much longer, because over on the development blog, Simogo has suggested that the game could be out as soon as next month. Year Walk is still wrapped in a veil of secrecy though, with little information about…

Infestor Review
Ravenous Games are the makers of the League of Evil games. Infestor has a very similar button layout and almost the same visual style. It wouldn't be a leap of logic to assume that this is another crazy gauntlet of platforming finesse served up in iOS ready bite-sized levels. This game takes a different path however, sacrificing twitch platforming skill for a more slow-paced thoughtful approach. Well when I say thoughtful, I mean it in loose terms. Let's just say that this puzzle platf…

Friday News Wrap-Up 25 January 2013
This weekend marks a long-weekend for those of us living in Australia as we celebrate our national day - as such, I'm sorry to say, but Monday will be a slow day. Still, we've got plenty to share right now, so lets hop to the Friday News Wrap-Up for the 25th of January, 2013. Star Command - If Kairosoft and Subset Games had a baby... If you haven't been following the development of War Balloon's Star Command, then I highly recommend you start now. With the game's release on the horizon (sadly a January release is likely out of the question), strategy and management sim fans are going to have their hands full. It looks like a fun cross-breed between a Kairosoft title and FTL, and given th…

Dream of Pixels Review
Dream of Pixels is a deceptive title. When one expects a damning expose on the single-mindedness of retro games and those who cling feverishly to nostalgia explored in game form, one does not expect a spin on a gaming classic. We're joking of course. What we have here can be best described as 'reverse Tetris', but that really doesn't do it justice. It's as good a starting off point as any though, so let us commence! There are multiple game modes that are unlocked through different mea…

Tin Man Can Review
There's something to be said for 'trial & error' gameplay done right. Games like Limbo and Another World are good examples. The player learns not to do something by being killed for their curiosity or their lack of reflex, but the checkpoint system of the game is lenient enough to allow the player to safely pursue their natural curiosity and exploratory drive. It's a nice balance, and one that Tin Man Can misses completely. Not only because every death sends you back to the start…

Ski Safari: Adventure Time Review
Back in May of 2012, Defiant released Ski Safari, an endless-runner focused around riding animals. It was a surprisingly focused offering which stood out from its peers, so it's not so surprising that a hot property like Adventure Time would want to bend the game's addictive core to its own purposes. Ski Safari: Adventure Time is exactly what you might expect a combination of Ski Safari and Adventure Time to be. The core gameplay remains the same: escape the avalanche by riding animal…

Sponsored Feature: Ladbrokes on Ladbrokes Tomb Raider for iPhone and iPad
Lara Croft has certainly been around the block. Since 1996, she’s climbed onto consoles, swam onto PCs, and swung onto handhelds. Now, though, she’s jumping over to iOS... but not in the way you might expect. Ladbrokes Tomb Raider, featuring Lara Croft, is a slot machine app, you see. We spoke to a Ladbrokes representative to discuss the marriage of one of the biggest icons in gaming with one of the most popular genres in the smartphone market. So, how do Ladbrokes Mobile use Lara Croft and the Tomb Raider name to make their app stand out from all the other slot machines on the App Store? “A new storyline, called the The Secret of the Sword, was created exclusively…

Might & Magic Clash of Heroes Review
The appearance of Might & Magic Clash of Heroes on the iOS platform marks its third transplantation from the original DS release. After garnering praise for both its handheld and console release, mobile gamers can now experience the wonderfully paced and executed Tactical-RPG from Capybara Games, the minds behind Critter Crunch and co-authors of Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP. Explaining the mechanics might take a moment, but those paying attention may already remember a g…
