Captain America: The Winter Soldier - The Official Game Review

We are willing to bet that Captain America: The Winter Soldier - The Official Game is not a direct translation of the source movie's plot. This is because so many of Cap’s iconic nemeses that appear in this game that, were the movie to follow the story, you would need to bring a sleeping bag into the cinema along with your popcorn The Super Soldier is now operating as a member of S.H.I.E.L.D. under orders from Nick Fury. You must guide him and a small two man strike force into a…

Boom Beach Review

Boom Beach is developer Supercell's follow-up to the phenomenally successful Clash of Clans. This lineage is obvious the moment you boot up the app, with the cartoony visuals, resource management, and tower defense-style battles echoing its fantasy-inspired ancestor.  However, rather than dump you in a Nordic netherword, Boom Beach has you establishing a base on a small tropical island. Your army has arrived to battle the evil Blackguard forces that have captured the surrounding…

Game Insight declassifies its unknown enemies in upcoming sci-fi strategy X-Mercs: Invasion

X-Mercs: Invasion is a sci-fi strategy game. It involves taking control of a military squad whom you must lead into battle against alien invaders. You are dropped into scuffles by a snazzy looking airship, and the ensuing combat plays out in turn-based fashion on a virtual grid. Once you've completed a fight, you can return to your base to upgrade squad members, research new weaponry, and monitor the global situation from your command room. If this is all sounding weirdly familiar, then you've probably played X-Com: Enemy Unknown, a game to which X-Mercs undoubtedly owes a sizeable creative debt. There does appear to be some subtle deviations from the X-Com formula, however. For exampl…

Tiny Space Adventure | Hands-On

Tiny Space Adventure | Hands-On

You know that bit in Scooby Doo cartoons where the gang rushs between doors in a long corridor, entering one room and emerging from another, seemingly disconnected door further down the hallway? Well, that's a bit like how it felt to play new sci-fi puzzler Tiny Space Adventure. You take control of an astronaut who must navigate a series of doors to reach an exit. Along the way, you have to avoid getting frazzled laser barriers, or spotted by robot sentries. As you're popping in and out of identical-looking black doors, you need a decent memory and a good mind for pattern recognition to be successful. Which probably explains the trouble I had reaching the end of some of the levels. Check…

AppSpy Plays: Star Horizon (Twitch catch-up)

In case you missed out on our regular AppSpy Plays live stream last Friday, we’ve brought it back to life using modern technology on our YouTube channel (oh, and below too). On-rails sci-Fi shooter Star Horizon received a 4 out of 5 in our review last week. So, having not played it personally, Peter and I planted ourselves firmly in front of it to see what this looker could do. There was barrel-rolling, betraying, blame for one-starring missions and a trench run that looked awfully familiar... We had a great turnout for the live stream, taking some much appreciated advice from onlookers, including developer Tabasco Interactive who joined us in the chatroom. Aside from our regular '…

Get Assassin’s Creed Pirates for a steal on the App Store today

If you've been on the fence about Assassin’s Creed Pirates, now might be the perfect time you climb onboard. You see, Ubisoft has just dropped the price of the naval battle game to £1.49 / $1.99 This mobile tie-in to Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag has you sailing the Caribbean as Alonzo Batilla, an eager young Captain willing to do anything to make his fortune. Taking part in fierce naval battles, you must scupper enemy vessels, and capture anything from frigates to Man-o-Wars to aid your conquest of the West-Indies. The latest update also lets you partake in whale hunting. It may be a little less glamourous - and it but more cruel - than the game's other…

Escher-inspired puzzle game Monument Valley will be turning heads this Thursday

When the first trailer for Monument Valley was released back in December, its topsy-turvy gameplay and Escher art style turned our heads in more ways than one. Now, developer ustwo has confirmed that beautiful puzzler will be hitting the App Store this Thursday. In the game, you take control of a little girl named Aida who is looking for forgiveness. You must lead her to the top of a series of towers by manipulating the environment itself, moving platforms and re-positioning objects to clear a path to the exit. As you can see from the video above, Monument Valley is a gorgeous looking game, realising a world which is as aesthetically pleasing as it is mathematically precise. Keep your…

Sometimes You Die Review

Sometimes You Die Review

Describing Sometimes You Die is surprisingly tough. Reducing it to its mechanical elements does the concept a disservice. However, recounting journey runs the risk of ruining the various twists and meta-commentaries contained within it. It asks you to think about what a game is, what you consider fun, and what you are prepared to endure in the name of entertainment. That may sound pretentious - and at its heart Sometimes You Die is just that - but it is none the worse for it…

Inventive block puzzler Shapist reduced to 69p / 99c on iPad

Sliding block-puzzler Shapist has just been reduced to 69p / 99c (down from £1.99 / $2.99) on iPad. Shapist at first appears no different to its block-manipulating genre cousins. It involves trying to clear a space in the shape that will allow you to move to the next level. There is no tutorial and no explanation as to how to proceed. It's pure intuitive trial and error from the get go. However, as you make your way through the game, you'll eventually come across mechanics brand new to the genre. Certain blocks can be shrunk or stretched to fit in a variety of different spaces. Others don't appear to want to move from their initial position, pinging right back as soon as you…
