Play with fire at midnight tonight in sparky arcade game Primal Flame

Firey dodge-'em-up Primal Flame will sputter to life on the App Store at midnight tonight. A gesture-based twitch game from developer Irrelevant Fish, Primal Flame is the digital embodiment of everything your mother told you not to do. You see, this is a game about playing with matches. To start, you strike your match by swiping the touchscreen. Once the match is lit, it's up to you to keep the flame burning. This isn't as easy as it sounds, however. You'll have to avoid raindrops, snowflakes, and falling leaves, all of which will extinguish your flame in a moment if they make contact. What's more, sentient plants will snake towards the light, ready to snuff out the flame-retardant in…

Pirate-themed puzzler The Voyage to weigh anchor on the App Store this Thursday

Developer Mojo Bones is preparing to launch The Voyage, its pirate-themed follow-up to puzzler The Curse, onto the App Store. Over the course of game he'll throw no less than 100 different puzzles at you, ranging from number problems and pattern recognition tests, to mazes and sandwich preperation. Yes: sandwich preperation. A pirate's got to eat, you know. Tallking to sister site Pocket Gamer, Mojo Bones co-founder Stuart Ryall revealed that the dev team are "huge fans of the Monkey Island series - especially the humour - and this is pretty much our nod to the original series." This seabound brain-teaser is t…

Bug Heroes 2 Review

While marshalling an army of insects may not be the Pentagon's idea of a winning combat strategy, it proves surprisingly effective - and entertaining - in the third-person multiplayer battler Bug Heroes 2. The premise of the game is straightforward: lead a two-man squad of tiny gun-toting insects into battle against approaching hordes of equally insectoid enemies. Before starting your first game, you randomly select a squad of two from the roster of 25 bugs, each of which have unique…

Adventure classic Another World on sale for 69p / 99c

There are few games as aptly named as Delphine Software's Another World. This slice of gaming history may be 23 years old, but  remains an fondly remembered classic - one which you can now pick up for 69p / 99c on your iPhone or iPad. When it was first released on Amiga and Atari ST in 1991, Another World transported early gamers to a polygonal world beyond their imagination. Looking at the original now this seems laughable, but the cinematic story remains a fantastic tale of friendship and adventure. Bulkypix's 2011 iOS port adds a new coat of paint to the alien worlds. This brings texture and depth to the old polygons, breathing new life into the classic game. The port shows…

Mad Catz unveils new C.T.R.L.i iOS 7 controller at Mobile World Congress

For a long time, Mad Catz has been known as one of the leading manufacturers of joysticks, headphones, keyboards, and gamepads. Now, at the Mobile World Congress, the company announced that it has created its first iOS 7 compatible controller - the C.T.R.L.i. Yes, we know it's a silly name. But the C.T.R.L.i's chassis has a fantastic pedigree, lifting its design directly from Mad Catz Xbox 360 acclaimed MLG Pro Circuit controller. Providing there are no changes to this core design, the new pad should have a great build quality and responsive keys – though its size could be a worry for on-the-go gamers. If its size doesn't put you off, there are a number of changes to the pad in its…

New emulator lets you play Game Boy favourites in your iPhone web browser

Who wants to play Game Boy classic Mario Land on their iPhone?  Of course you do. However, with Nintendo refusing to jump onboard with the mobile revolution, the only way to play old Mario games is via emulation software - most of which requires a jailbroken iPhone to run. However, browser-based emulator Ben's Midi Gameboy allows you to play not only Mario Land, but authentic recreations of Tetris, Kirby's Dream Land, Bomberman, Bomb Jack, and a few other GameBoy games - all without downloading a thing. What's more, as the emulator is hosted online, anyone with an iPhone and a working web browser can use it. All you need to do is open Safari, visit the site, and start reliving your…

Hookshot platformer Mikey Hooks now supports iOS controllers

If, like us, you are a fan of Mikey Hooks, then you will know that its fast-paced action already handled incredibly well using the touchscreen controls. However, that hasn't stopped developer BeaverTap from patching in additional support for iOS compatible controllers. There is now a fairly decent range of controllers available for iPhones, including the MOGA Ace Power, and the Logitech PowerShell. But, if you are looking for something to use across all of your iOS devices, the SteelSeries Stratus maybe your best bet. Connecting via Bluetooth, the controller is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPods - provided they're running iOS 7, of course. If you already have Mikey Hooks a…

Dual Survivor is waiting on the App Store to split your mind in two

Brain busting action-puzzler Dual Survivor is now live on the App Store. This co-ordination challenging vertical-scrooler has guiding two ships through parallel mazes simultaneously. You  take control of each craft with a thumb, and must trace the line you want your ships to take across the twin floating paths. But like patting your head while rubbing your stomach, each simple task will fast become infuriating.  Focus too much on navigate one ship past a jump or obstacle, and your other ship will be a pile of sci-fi rubble before you can say "I hate multitasking." The architecture doesn't make things any easier. The paths your ships are zooming down are pulsing, colourful…

Free them, and you'll be able to use their powers to help you defeat the dragon which lies at the end of your journey. Mini Ni…

Delayed RTS sequel Autumn Dynasty: Warlords invading the App Store next Thursday

We mentioned yesterday that, following a leave of absence, handsome RTS Autumn Dynasty has returned to App Store, and is available free of charge. Since then, we have discovered the sequel, Autumn Dynasty: Warlords, will arrive on iOS on February 27th.  This sequel will expand on the gorgeous painted worlds of the original strategy game, dropping you back into a war-torn feudal-era China and tasking you with leading your army to victory. In fact, we were supposed to be knee deep in flags and flying arrows already, as developer Touch Dimension first planned to release Autumn Dynasty: Warlords back in November of last year.  However, according to the team, they delayed the…

Card Wars - Adventure Time Review

Card Wars - Adventure Time Review

Cartoon Network has taken the inspiration for Card Wars – Adventure Time from a card game seen in the cult cartoon. But, while its reflexive self-referencing makes our heads hurt, it manages to be a fairly decent  customisable card game - with one major caveat. The basics will be familiar to CCG fans: you use cards to summon creatures to fight for you, in an effort to reduce your opponent's health to zero. The set up stage sees you laying terrain down across four lanes. Th…

Out There | Hands-On

Out There | Hands-On

I love a bit of space exploration. Whether I'm searching for ore in Mass Effect's Nimbus Cluster, or fending off Rockmen in FTL (which is on its way to iOS, incidentally), you'll always find me with a smile on my face, and a Star Trek reference on the tip of my tongue. Which is why I was interested in pulling up the blast shield of space exploration sim Out There, the soon-to-be released sci-fi adventure from Mi-Clos Studio. Rather than throwing flashy, real-time 3D battles at your face every 60 seconds, Out There takes a more measured approach to the art of intergalactic travel. Instead of launching a never-ending volley of photon torpedoes, find yourself managing your ship's fuel…
