In Fear I Trust Review

In Fear I Trust Review

In many ways, Black Wing Foundations' take on survival horror ticks all the right boxes. Spooky institutional setting: check. Freaky sanity and fear effects: check. But at some point during the process of freaking us out, In Fear I Trust shifts from unnerving to frustrating. Waking on a rickety bed in a Russian prison asylum, the hero of the tale has no memory of the events that lead him there. The door to his cell is locked, but everything he needs to escape is dotted around the room…

The Bydo Empire invades the App Store again in R-Type II

It was 25 years ago that R-Type II first appeared in arcades. As they were when the first game exploded onto the scene, young gamers were wowed by the side-scrolling sequel's massive bosses, fast action, and punishing difficulty. Now, a mere quarter of a decade later, developer DotEmu has ported the sci-fi shooter to iPhone and iPad. The Irem classic is set two years after the original R-Type. This timeout, you take control of the R-9c - an upgraded version of the original game's R-9 – to once again battle the evil Bydo Empire. Along with the classic weapons from the first game, the R-9c brings with it a few upgrades to help in the fight. A new shotgun laser and search las…

Rovio announces next Angry Birds game with image of new characters

Rovio has released a teaser image promoting a brand new Angry Birds game, complete with a collection of new characters. The image, which was posted on the official Angry Birds Twitter feed, shows the outline of six never-before-seen birds. The accompanying message reads: "Big adventure with new birds coming soon!" Until recently, Rovio had kept the physics-puzzler gameplay of the Angry Birds franchise true to its origins. Whether the action was set in a on a beach, in space, or in a galaxy far, far away, it always involved pinging birds at pigs with a simple gesture. Big adventure with new birds coming soon! #NewAngryBirds  pic.twitter.com/DWdZ7fBrXq — Angry Birds (@AngryBir…

Radiohead's first game Polyfauna merges music and mind-bending visuals

Radiohead has released its first game onto the App Store - an interactive musical experience called PolyFauna. Inspired by their The King of Limbs sessions, Radiohead has drawn on early computer life-experiments and creatures spawned from their subconscious mind to create the game's world. These images have then been realised by the digital designers at Universal Everything. Taking sounds from the song Bloom, this free app could most easily be compared to an interactive screensaver. As the games description states, the screen is a "window into an evolving world." In the context of the game, this means you can guide your floating avatar around the screen by tilting your device. You'll fi…

Final Fantasy VI | Hands-On

Square Enix continues its great tradition of rifling through its extensive catalogue of older titles, and seeing how much it can get away with charging for them. Their latest re-release is an iOS port of Final Fantasy VI. Seen by many as the pinnacle of 16-bit JRPGs, and held by many to be the best entry in the oeuvre, this touchscreen port of the genre favourite has many gamers excited - and concerned. Is the game still a classic? Is it worth your time and money? What's happened to those Super Nintendo visuals? And can you still perform wrestling moves on locomotives? All these questions and more are answered in our hands-on video.…

Clash of Clans developer Supercell releasing Boom Beach worldwide in March

While we in the UK and US have been patiently waiting for Supercell's latest free-to-play extravaganza Boom Beach to reach our shores, the game has been busy blowing up Canadian and Australian App Stores in beta form. However, we can now confirm that the watery follow-up to global sensation Clash of Clans will land on App Stores everywhere next month. Though Boom Beach is clearly influenced by Clash of Clans' building, fortification, and defence mechanics, Supercell CEO IIkka Paananen claims that this new freemium base-builder is a different beast. Speaking to financial journalists in a recent call, Paananen said: "We've made some risky choices. There aren't any clans in the game and…

Ollie around The Docks with new Touchgrind Skate 2 update

As thrilling as it is to soar through the air on a piece of wood with wheels nailed to it, skateboarding is only as fun as the park you're skating in. Luckily for fans of Touchgrind Skate 2, Illusion Labs has heard the cries of all you adrenaline junkies, and delivered a new skatepark to the game's roster: The Docks. Originally, the game contained three huge parks for eager boarders to stiffy, sack tap, and gay twist their way around (no angry emails, please - those are all real tricks). This additional new park is equally large, and brings with it a host of new waterfront appropriate challenges. This update also brings with it a host of tweaks designed to improve the game's already ti…

Flappy Bird Addiction: A Survivor's Story

When Flappy Bird creator Dong Nguyen was asked why he pulled his viral hit Flappy Bird from the App Store, he didn't give the answer we were all expecting. Rather than cite the stream of hateful Twitter comments or concern over cloning allegations, the Vietnamese developer gave a simple reason: addiction. "[Flappy Bird] happened to become an addictive product," Nguyen explained in an interview with Forbes. "I think it has become a problem. To solve that problem, it's best to take down Flappy Bird." Though some have questioned the sincerity of this explanation, we have uncovered evidence that Flappy Bird addiction is not only real, but is destroying lives. The video above tells the stor…

Supernauts | Hands-On

Some things just don't work very well when they're combined. Electricity and water. Blackcurrant cordial and milk. Paul and Barry Chuckle. These are things that, though fine by themselves, cause pain, indigestion, and comic mischief when put together. So, could anything good come from combining the much-loved hardcore builder Minecraft, with super casual wait-em-up FarmVille, in a free-to-play mid-core game from Finnish startup Grand Cru? If our time with Supernauts is anything to go by, the answer is 'yes.' Here's why:…

Flappy Bird creator claims he pulled the game because it was 'an addictive product'

Dong Nguyen has revealed that he pulled his mobile smash hit Flappy Bird from the App Store because it had become "an addictive product." Speaking about the game's removal in an interview with Forbes, the creator of Flappy Bird claims that it was the unexpectedly addictive quality of the game which led to its demise. "Flappy Bird was designed to play in a few minutes when you are relaxed," Nguyen explains in the interview. "But it happened to become an addictive product. I think it has become a problem. To solve that problem, it's best to take down Flappy Bird." Despite being released in May 2013, Flappy Bird didn't make an impression on the App Store charts until last week. Thoug…

Darkest Dungeon reaches Kickstarter goal with 30 days to spare

With 30 days still to go, turn-based strategy game Darkest Dungeon from Red Hook Studios has already reached its Kickstarter goal of $75,000. Currently the turn-based dungeon crawler is destined for PC and Mac. The studio's stretch goals reflect this hardware choice, with additional characters, cinematics, and Steam mod integration all promised if the fund breaks the $500,000 barrier. What is particularly interesting about Darkest Dungeon is its approach dungeon crawling. While the goal will still be to hack your way past the forces of chaos to defeat a timeless evil, you will not be finding shiny weapons and armour to improve your four-person squad. Instead, you will be managing the team'…

To do this you have to carve your way past a range of hazards, including Yetis, totem poles, and an approaching avalanche. Games Workshop's Warhammer Quest going cheap on the App Store

Games Workshop's board game conversion Warhammer Quest is currently on sale for 69p / 99c, down from £2.99 / $4.99. We had a lot of fun with Warhammer Quest when it arrived on the App Store last year. Building a party of adventures, you can guide wizards, warriors, and a host of other heroic classes against the hordes of chaos. As you explore dungeons and other subterranean areas, you have to use tactics, magic, and big swords to emerge victorious against the orks, skeletons, and other evils that stand in your way. Offering hours of turn based adventuring, we think 69p / 99c is a steal for Warhammer Quest. We recommend you pull on your +3 Boots of Bargaining and hea…
