Gravity Blocks - The Last Rotation Review

Meet the Gravity Blocks. There's the mint tea-obsessed Henry. There's Dr Zoidblock, who is working on a zombie vaccine. Blockman loves to recycle, while Blox gets a kick out of removing pesky wormholes. Each block appears in his own set of levels in Gravity Blocks: The Last Rotation, a block-puzzler which requires you to guide your square heroes to a goal by playing around with gravity. Usually you'll find yourself directing the lead block towards a dot on the screen. Other blocks als…

Where's my Water 2 removes its energy system in recent update

Where's my Water 2 removes its energy system in recent update

In our review of Where's my Water 2, we harshly criticised the game for its freemium design, forcing the player to pay money or wait to play more of the game. Well it seems Disney has taken this feedback to heart. We weren't the only ones who felt this a horrible move in a great franchise, so now with the most recent update, the system is gone, and you can play Where's my Water 2 to your heart's content. It shows you that developers and publishers do listen to their feedback, and sometimes they even enact change because of it. That's one of the reasons we're here after all!…

Shadowmatic is looking fantastic (a rhyme!)

Shadowmatic is looking fantastic (a rhyme!)

One of my favourite games on the iPhone is Blueprint 3D. There's something I find endlessly enjoyable about rotating seemingly abstract shapes until they create something. The upcoming Shadowmatic by Triada Studios looks to take that idea and extend it to fully three dimensional objects casting shadows on the wall. The result, while a little mind-bending looks like an absolute winner. Shadowmatic doesn't have a release date announced yet except for early 2014, so be sure to keep on the lookout. I know I will be!…

Kick the Ball! involves flick controlled destruction

When watching the trailer for Kick the Ball!, I got a bit of a Boom Blox vibe, and if you played that game, you should know how enjoyable physics based destruction can be. Well remove the explosions and use a soccer ball, and that's this game in a nutshell... and it looks like it just might be a fun ol' time. Kick the Ball! is $2.99 (AU) in the App Store right now, right at this moment! If you like what you saw, why not give it a try?  [App Store Link]…

Blockswipe just looks like fast paced fun

The 'swipe the block to the goal' puzzle game isn't anything new, not by a longshot. However, I think once you watch this trailer of Blockswipe, you will be won over by its fast pace, simple visual design, and the music that accompanies all your swiping. Have a look now! Blockswipe looks to include plenty of content with its 150 levels, and is available now in the App Store for $0.99! Go forth and swipe those blocks today! [App Store Link]…

Ridge Racer Slipstream Hands-On

Though developer Namco Bandai decided not to release its customary Ridge Racer title to accompany the launch of the PlayStation 4, that doesn't mean the team has been dozing off behind the wheel. You see, Ridge Racer Slipstream, a premium mobile instalment of the drift-based racing series, has just appeared on the App Store. Despite the fact it's only been out for around 24 hours, there have already been negative rumblings about the game's potentially restrictive in-app purchase system.  You'll have to wait for the AppSpy review to get our considered take on Ridge Race Slipstream's driving and IAP shenanigans. However, if you want to see what the game looking like in motion, you ca…

Walking Dead: The Game - Season 2 Review

The first episode of The Walking Dead: Season 2 pulls no punches. If you hoped there would be any light at the end of season one's dark and mouldering tunnel, then this short, sharp establishing act will brutally bash those hopes to death with a bloody rock. After former protagonist Lee's unfortunate exit from the series, his once ward Clementine has become something of a lone wolf. In this new episode, you control Clementine directly, helping her face everything from imminent starvat…

Colossatron: Massive World Threat Hands-On

Colossatron: Massive World Threat, Halfbrick's monstrous take on the match-three genre, will go live on the App Store at midnight tonight. Match-three games are big business nowadays, with the like of Candy Crush Saga reaping millions of dollars on a monthly basis. However, Australian developer Halfbrick has approached the genre from a drastically different - and rather ingenious - angle. You have to monitor the progress of a giant snake-like robot which comes crashing down to earth with the intention of destroying everything in its path. Your specific job is to bolt coloured modules onto the body of the snake as and when they appear. Snap on three matching modules in a row, and your su…

Cut the Rope 2 Hands-On

Candy-catching sequel Cut the Rope 2 has just appeared on the New Zealand App Store. It'll be heading to the UK and US at midnight tonight, and will cost 69p / 99c. This time around, developer Zeptolab has freed loveable green monster Om Nom from his boxy prison. Turns out he's been abducted by spiders, and must munch his way through a variety of outdoor environments in order to get home. Beyond the visual changes, Cut the Rope 2 features a couple of new gamplay mechanics, and some extra characters. To help Om Nom on his quest, you'll need to take control of 5 Nommines, each of whom have a special ability.  For example, in the hands-on video above, you'll see me interact with a Nom…

Ghost no more: real-time multiplayer comes to Real Racing 3

Real Racing 3 has expanded the scope of its multiplayer mode, with a new update now letting you compete wirelessly with other racers in real-time. When Real Racing 3 first appeared on the App Store earlier this year, EA and developer Firemonkeys made a point of promoting the game's Time Shifted Multiplayer feature.  This neat innovation let you compete against the ghosts of other players in your Game Center list, even when those players were offline. However, due to popular demand, the Real Racing 3 team has decided to update its popular free-to-play racer with a good old-fashioned mutliplayer mode, allowing you to go head-to-head against your friends in real-time.  Accompany…

Nintendo looking to experiment with smartphones and tablets

Nintendo looking to experiment with smartphones and tablets

If there's one prevailing line of discussion related to gaming I've heard more than any other this year, it's that Nintendo should change its status from a console manufacturer to a third party publisher. Basically, people think they should stop making consoles and handhelds, and put their games on other systems, and especially smartphones and tablets. "Think of how Pokemon would sell on the iPhone" the advocates of such change insist. However, while it seems like a good idea of the surface, one has to wonder about the financial validity of selling a game for a few dollars on iOS that you've been selling in the millions this year on 3DS handheld at a much higher retail price. Nintendo is…
