One would hope 'The Franz Kafka Videogame' is kafkaesque

Inspired by the works of German author Franz Kafka (who some regard as the premier writer of the 20th century), it's only natural that games have taken inspiration from his themes of persecution, absurdity, and the surreal nature of his writing. Going one step further, Denis Galanin has crafted The Franz Kafka Videogame, in which the protagonist K is given employment and sent on a journey to a world unline anything he expected. The trailer will set the tone of this adventure. Please watch. The game wishes to allow the player to experience the uncertainity and absurdity that K is feeling in the situations he finds himself in. If played off right, this could be quite the provactive exp…

New helicopter missions and Africa levels in Dead Trigger 2 update

The infection which powers Madfinger's zombie shooter hit Dead Trigger 2 has now spread further into Africa, thanks to the game's latest update. In addition to tweaking some difficulty levels and rebalancing a few missions, the Czech developer behind Dead Trigger 2 has added new levels set in Africa. You'll also get to test you aim on some extra sniper missions, and take to the skies in additional helicopter challenges. Said to feature over 50 new missions (well, actually, the App Store listing says "50 new gamplays", but we're guessing that's a mistranslation), the update also reduces the number of fast zombies which spawn during certain stages. Interestingly, Madfinger has also laid out…

Ridge Racer Slipstream coming to iOS on December 19th

Twenty years since its inception, Namco Bandai's enduring arcade racing series Ridge Racer is set to skid onto the App Store. Titled Ridge Racer Slipstream, this mobile iteration of the franchise promises to teach mobile gamers the four 'd's: drift, drive, dash, and dominate. As the trailer below shows, you'll be pitting your driving skills against other souped-up supercars over 20 tracks (10 unique, and 10 reverse). This time out, there appears to be particular emphasis on customising your car. While there are only 12 vehicles initially available, you can tweak each of your rides' bodywork, wheels, and engine in over 300 different ways As for the races themselves, they seem to tick al…

Continue?9876543210 is a lot more than it seems

Yes, the name of the game is Continue?9876543210. You are a videogame character that has fallen in battle, and wanders the random access memory of the program, trying in vein to come to terms with the inevitability of its own deletion.  Created by Jason Oda, this is an art game meant to be open to interpretation. As you wander the shanty towns of this memory, you encounter other denizens and travellers, while avoiding the garbage collectors. The inspiration behind the game seems to come from a very personal place, and watching the trailer, you get a sense of curiosity and wonder (even if it is a little longer than most trailers). Have a look for yourselves. The changes in local…

Build your own iOS game with Createrria, out this Thursday

Game-building physics sandbox Createrria is set to go live on the App Store this Thursday. Developed by Incuvo, this ambitious project aims to make the act of creating games accessible to non-coders by providing a simple set of tools that are easy to understand and fun to use. As you can see from the release trailer below, the app lets you summon and manipulate objects like platforms and power-ups, and generate enemies and obstacles, all with a series of taps. Then, once you've built your game, you simply activate it and start playing. Having gone hands-on with Createrria, I can confirm that it is extremely easy to knock-up a basic platformer or Angry Birds-style physics-flinger within…

Time is of the essence in Kemco's latest JRPG Chronus Arc

Time is of the essence in Kemco's latest JRPG Chronus Arc

Japanese RPG factory Kemco has just spat out another of its retro-styled, fantasy themed quest-'em-ups. This one's called Chronus Arc. According the the App Store blurb, it features "familiar quests" and dungeons. Well, at least they're up front about it. The actual plot concerns powerful artifacts called Chronus Fragments. When assembled, these fragments can control the passage of time. It all sounds a bit Chrono Trigger to us, but we're sure that's just a coincidence or a paradox or something. Anyhow, it's up to you to reclaim this time shrapnel from a sinister chap named Geppel, who probably wants to use it to travel back in time to just after he was born and persuade his parents to gi…

Coaster Crazy Deluxe Review

You'd expect the creators of Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 to be able to cook up a decent coaster-based game for the iPhone. Well, that's exactly what Frontier Developments accomplished last year with Coaster Crazy, a free-to-play rollercoaster creation game based around tailoring individual coasters to their patron's needs. Now a year later, the free-to-play aspects have been removed, new challenges have been added, and two whole new areas have been bolted on. As a result, we thought we'd t…

Icycle: On Thin Ice Review

As iOS gamers, we've been exposed to some weird scenarios over the years. Narky birds with porky vendettas; hungry green monsters which subsist entirely on dangling sugar lozenges – to us, these things are just another day in the App Store. Icycle: On Thin Ice is game about a naked man named Dennis, who finds himself riding a tricycle through ever-shifting landscapes. Originally we thought the game might be showing us a dream or nightmare scenario. Then Dennis gets hit by a fish…

Destructamundo's rhythmic explosions confuse us

Destructamundo's rhythmic explosions confuse us

Destructamundo is a rhythmic puzzle game created by Robotube Games with assistance from Gaijin, the makers of the Bit.trip series. From what we understand, you have a specific amount of warheads you need to use to blow up all the planets on screen, and the whole thing is somehow tied to the music. See we're not too confident in how the game works, even after watching the trailer - only that it looks quite intriguing. Judge for yourselves. The game is slated to be out early next year for iOS and Ouya. As usual, we'll let you know when we're getting close to release. Destructamundo looks too compelling to pass up.…

Aaru's Awakening is fascinatingly gorgeous

This upcoming platformer has a very distinctive visual style. The creature you're playing also has the ability to blink between small distances, and it looks like the gameplay is based around mastery of this mechanic. Aaru's Awakening is being made for PC and Mac release at the moment, but they have plans to work on iOS and Android ports. The game won't be out on iOS anytime soon as they are prioritizing the computer release, but in the meantime, have a watch of the trailer. We'll let you know more next year when Aaru's Awakening gets closer to launch.…

Trade in your rocket booster for a giant mech with new Jetpack Joyride update

Jetpack Joyride is great and all, but I've always felt it was lacking one important element: the ability to play as an enormous homicidal robot. Thankfully, the folks at Halfbrick have seen fit to correct this terrible oversight in the game's most recent update, codenamed 'S.A.M.'  If you can get Barry to collect three tokens, then the stubble-faced aeronaut will leap into the belly of the giant mech. Check it out: What's more, if you manage to hop inside S.A.M.'s metal chassis on five consecutive days, you'll unlock some bonus costumes for Barry.  And, for those of you who already have Christmas on the brain (for shame) you can now purchase Santa's rocket-equipped sleigh, an…

Document editing suite Polaris Office reduced from $19.99 to 99c

We realise that we usually focus on games here at AppSpy. Still, even dedicated gamers like ourselves (very) occasionally use our iPhones or iPads for business purposes.  The Polaris Office suite has earned a reputation as one of the better document editing apps on the App Store. Basically, it lets you edit a wide range of MS Office documents (including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint pages) using your Apple tablet or phone. It also interacts with filesharing services like Dropbox, allowing you to move your edited files back and forth between handset and PC. All this functionality comes at a cost, though. When Polaris Office originally hit the App Store last year, it came with a price…

Bacon the Game certainly not one for vegetarians

Bacon the Game certainly not one for vegetarians

Most people love bacon. It's one of the many delicious meats given to us by pigs, and now it is the centre of a line drawing game for iOS. Draw a path through all the bacon so that your little avatar can eat all the bacon. A simple goal, and one that's easy to relate to. As you might imagine, the paths drawn become more complex as the game goes on. The trailer will tell you more! This greasy title is set to release on the App Store December 5th. Pretty fitting if you ask us... ham is a common Christmas meat, so why not play a game based around bacon in the same month?…

Rev your chainswords for the debut trailer of Warhammer 40,000: Space Wolf

Mere days after Games Workshop's tabletop corridor shooter Space Hulk lumbers onto iOS, another Warhammer 40K property has been sighted making a charge for App Store glory. According to its brand new announcement trailer, Warhammer 40,000: Space Wolf will bring turn-based combat mechanics to the collectible card game genre, and shower both elements in a fountain of blood. Cooked up by the folks at HeroCraft, the game will be free-to-play, and is set to arrive in the spring of 2014. The trailer (above) shows some sturdy looking Space Wolves being equipped with weaponry via a card selection screen, before putting those weapons to devastating use against some Chaos Marines. As we don't ge…
