Dice Jockey Review

Whether you play Monopoly, the craps table at your local casino, or a game of Warhammer, we're sure you're all familiar with dice - those little cubes of luck and chance. Dice Jockey takes a little bit of a different tack, demanding you learn the layout of a six-sided die, and use this knowledge to align and match face values to create combos and complete levels. Dragging a die with your finger will roll it along the game grid. The aim is to line up a series of dice so that they all d…

Paint it Back Review

Anyone whose spent any time on a Nintendo system should be familiar with Picross, the puzzle game which involves creating pixelated pictures by filling in squares on a grid. To help you solve these puzzles, numbers are attached to the end of every row and column. These numbers tell you how many squares must be filled, and how many should be left blank. The trick is to work out which squares you need to paint to complete the picture without putting a foot wrong along the way. It's a si…

A sequel to New Star Soccer possibly in the works

A sequel to New Star Soccer possibly in the works

This is probably more from James' wheelhouse as Football is a much bigger deal in the UK where he resides, rather than Australia where I reside. For instance, I was actually unaware of New Star Soccer or its popularity (it won the BAFTA award for best sports game of the year), but in a recent studio profile from our sister site Pocketgamer.biz, developer Simon Read talks about his team's desire to create a full sequel that will span all console and handheld devices (including mobile of course). This is exciting news for fans of the game. If any of you wish to educate me on why you enjoy New Star Soccer so much, please do so in the comments!…

Brainsquare is set to test your grey matter

The premise of Brainsquare seems simple enough - swipe coloured tiles around until they all line up with their corresponding pegs. Watching it in action though makes my brain squeal in terror. The trailer might instill similar reactions in you. Watch at your own risk! The game is from Sompom Creative Studio, a young indie studio based in Cambodia. Those with a penchant to test their mental wits will likely delight at the challenge held within Brainsquare. For the rest of us... well, the game is free, so why not give it a try? You might enjoy what it has to offer. [App Store Link]…

The Wolf Among Us coming to the App Store this autumn

Having floored the critics with is multi-award-winning interactive comic book adaptation The Walking Dead: The Game, Telltale Games is prepping fairytale-inspired follow-up The Wolf Among Us for the App Store. Based on another comic book property - this time the Fables series - The Wolf Among Us casts you as Bigby Wolf, a man with more than a little animal inside him. It's up to Wolf to get to the bottom of a grisly murder, the solving of which will involve interacting other characters pulled from the pages of folklore. Along the way, you'll be forced to make difficult decisions which could have huge repercussions further on in the game. As you can see from the trailer (above) fans…

ARC Squadron: Redux Review

ARC Squadron: Redux Review

Last year, developer Psyonix released Arc Squadron, a well-reviewed space shooter with great controls and a load of content. Now almost a year later, the dev has restructured the game, introduced a few balancing tweaks, and made the whole experience free-to-play. This is Arc Squadron: Redux. As your ship (and the galaxy) is under attack by the mysterious and violent Guardians, humanity needs all the help it can get. You take control of a lowly janitor who finds himself in the cockpit…

Hero Academy creator's new game Echo Prime out now

Echo Prime, the new sci-fi action-RPG from Hero Academy creator Robot Entertainment, has just warped onto the App Store. While Hero Academy took a turn-based approach to its fantasy fisticuffs, Echo Prime is all about real time swordplay and flying lasers.  Cast as a space marine-looking security operative, you have to a series of vessels and fight your way through an intimidating roster of bio-mechanical aggressors. Helping you along the way are Echoes - ethereal spirits who grant you special powers and perks which can be triggered during battles. There's a touch of Hero Academy's asynchronous multiplayer mojo in the mix, too. If you like, you can call upon other player's Ec…

Catch up with Rayman Fiesta Run on November 7th

Everyone's favourite floaty-limbed hero is set to dash onto the App Store again next month. You see, Ubisoft, custodian of the Rayman series, has just announced that auto-runner sequel Rayman Fiesta Run will be available on iOS from November 7th. If you're familiar with last year's Rayman Jungle Run, then you'll understand why we're so excited for this fiery sequel. By combining the visual style of gorgeous console platformer Rayman Origins with short, ingenious levels, and a simple one-touch control scheme, developer Pastagames cooked up a real winner with Rayman Jungle Run. Though this follow-up has been developed by Ubisoft Casablanca, it looks like the team has stuck pretty close to…

DEAD TRIGGER 2 Review

DEAD TRIGGER 2 Review

In a world filled with derivative grey zombie shooters, how do you make yours stand out from the shambling crowd. In the case of Madfinger's 2012 hit Dead Trigger, the answer was simple: make it look fantastic. However, though it was definitely one of the prettiest games on the App Store, it was let down by repetitive gameplay, dull enemies, and freemium grind fatigue. With Dead Trigger 2, Madfinger has attempted to inject some variety into the series, adding new zombie types, more va…

Color Zen Kids is Colour Zen... for kids!

Color Zen Kids is Colour Zen... for kids!

Color Zen is shaping up to be one of my favourite games this year so far. I have a soft spot for simple and elegant puzzle titles, the colour matching and wiping gameplay of the original just hit that sweet spot of pure engagement. Today on the App Store, Large Animal Games releases Color Zen Kids. The game is targeting the 3 - 5 year old market, and tries to make the shapes more engaging by creating animals out of them, which the player then rearranges to meld together, eventually leaving a swath of only one colour. Have a look at the trailer... I don't have any kids myself, so couldn't comment on whether the game might be too complex or not engaging enough for them, but I like how…

Pixel People receives a massive Halloween update

For those of you still splicing together pixely humans to acquire new job types, you'll want to take a look at the latest update for Chillingo's Pixel People. Not only are there twenty four new jobs to uncover, plenty of new hideouts, new missions, and the ability to use candy as currency, but some of your townsfolk will be turning into zombies. That kind of thing is bound to have an effect on Utopia, and not in a positive way. For those of you unfamiliar with Pixel People, our review can be found here. Happy Halloween to the Utopia project!…

Apple unveils iPad Air and iPad Mini 2

It isn't be a new year without a new SKU of Apple products, and for those of you looking for an improved iPad, you now have a choice between the iPad Air, and the second generation of the iPad mini. The iPad Air is 7.5mm thick (which for our American readers is about a third of an inch). It also supposedly weighs only one pound. It uses the A7 chip architecture and boasts advanced wireless capability. It comes with an improved smartcase and looks to be an option for those who feel the iPad is too cumbersome a tablet. It will be available November 1st for US $499. The second generation of iPad mini, meanwhile, has a 7.9 inch screen with a resolution of 2048 x 1536. It also contains the A7 c…

Baboon has you protecting animals against monkeyshines

Baboon casts you as the titular creature. Armed with a box and arrow, it's your job to protect these animals against the threat of poachers. Have a look at the trailer to see for yourself. While the gameplay doesn't seem that engaging, there's something about the presentation and the gameplay that intrests us. I kind of want to see how bizarre the game gets. Baboon is out on the App Store now for $2.99. Part of the proceeds go to the Colorado Wildlife Sanctuary. No reports on whether they allow their baboons to run around with archery equipment. [App Store Link]…

Terraria 2 should launch on iOS alongside PC version

In the fight for the title of best 2D craft-'em-up on iOS, there are two major contenders: Terraria, and Junk Jack X. As you have probably noticed from AppSpy's ongoing series The Junk Jack X Files, we've taken to Junk Jack X in a big way. Developed from the ground-up for touchscreen devices, it features a slightly more intuitive interface than Terraria's, and more refined movement controls. However, the fight for mobile supremacy is not over. Terraria creator Andrew Spinks is preparing the battleplan for a second volley, revealing that Terraria 2 should arrive on iOS around the same time that the PC version is launched. Speaking to Pocket Gamer, Spinks said: "I am wanting to code Terra…

Dead Space talent behind F2P shooter Lawless

Dead Space talent behind F2P shooter Lawless

Publisher DeNA is having a stab at merging third-person shooting and free-to-play mechanics in upcoming gallery shooter Lawless. This 1990s-based blaster is the result of a team-up between two studios: Scattered Entertainment (responsible for freemium FPS The Drowning), and EightPixelSquare (founded by members of the Dead Space: Extraction team). According to Scattered Entertainment head Ben Cousins, Lawless will be "an intense skillful game designed as an ode to classic 'light gun' shooters and filled with the retro Californian feel of '90s bank robber movies." As you can see from the trailer (above), you'll be discharging rounds into law enforcers as you attempt to complete heists in…
