Snoopy Coaster Review

Snoopy Coaster Review

Snoopy Coaster is insidious. Last year Dave reviewed Madcoaster, and thought that it was an intriguing premise made far too forgiving, so much so that the game became quite boring. Well then why is Snoopy Coaster better when it's basically the same game with a different skin? well because Dave is a Peanuts fan of course, and while it's easy to sneer at a game using a licensed property to try and pull in fans of that property, the sad truth is that it works. Now don't get us wrong, this…

Review GAMES-UP By Dave Flodine, 11 years ago
Abalone® Review

We've spoken about the renaissance of board games on the iOS before, but one great thing about it aside from fans of these games having digital and portable copies of their favorite titles, is for gamers to experience games in this category that they have never come across. This is the case with us here at AppSpy and Abalone. On the surface it looks like a version of Chinese Checkers but once the rules of the game are explained you'll find one of those games that is simple to learn, bu…

Endgame: Syria Finally Approved for App Store... kind of

After three submission on the App Store, and being released already both on Android and PC, Endgame: Syria is finally available on iOS devices. The catch? They just had to remove all references to the country of Syria and the conflicting forces there-in.  Developer Tomas Rawlings of 'Game the News' explains the situation in this quote: "We've come to the end of three rejections and one appeal and the only way we've been able to get Endgame:Syria out on iOS was to remove all references to the real world and sadly that changes it from a 'newsgame' into just a 'game'. We've released this game version so at least players with Apple devices can get a feel for what we originally intend…

Double Fine Adventure gets a name

Double Fine Adventure gets a name

The experiment formerly known as Double Fine Adventure finally has a name and a synopsis. No longer do the millions of dollars Double Fine raised through KickStarter belong to an unnamed project, instead they're being used to fund the development of Broken Age. The game is set to tell the story of a young girl who's been chosen by her village as a sacrifice to a terrible monster, and a young boy who lives a solitary existence on a spaceship. Their paths entangle and entwine and, as you'd expect, adventure ensues. If you didn't put some money into the KickStarter campaign, you've still got a chance to become a backer of the game. Throwing cash at Double Fine seems to be the done thing nowad…

Yes, This Is XCOM: Enemy Unknown For iOS

This caught us completely by surprise, but then again with PAX East currently pumping out some great news for the gaming world in general, we probably should have guessed something of this magnitude was in the works. Firaxis have officially announced an adaption of XCOM: Enemy Unknown for the iOS platform, and while the graphical fidelity may be toned down, the gameplay is completely intact. Actually, 2K have released a titbit covering the details so hit the video for more info. Consider us ready and waiting for XCOM... I'll be playing on Iron Man mode... because I'm just too manly for the regular mode!…

Block Fortress Review

[Editor's Note: I've been playing the game quite seriously since recording the footage and I must say my personal experience mirrors much of what has been said below; the game has a wealth of depth, but scratching more than the surface can be very, very difficult. If the game looks appealing (as it did to me), search out some guides and you'll be lost for hours!] Games like Block Fortress can be quite a challenge to review. Not only does the game have a imposing learning curve to unde…

Update (ver. 1.2.2): Rōnin Review

[Version 1.2.2 Update: Since we last reviewed Ronin, the game has had some major changes made to its outer shell, focusing its efforts on the high-scoring aspect, while providing enough base motivation through upgrades and basic missions to keep casual audiences entertained (at least much longer than before). Other nifty updates include an alternative control scheme (you can now tap to attack, with swiping for 'evasions' only), new hazards to add to the fighting mechanic's novelty, and…

PPSSPP - PSP Emulation for Jailbroken Phones

PPSSPP - PSP Emulation for Jailbroken Phones

We don't normally engage in discussions about jailbreaking iOS devices, but every now and then you can see the appeal in going down that somewhat gray pathway. One such benefit includes being able to reduce the amount of portable devices you take out with you by emulating them on your iPhone or iPad. The clever boffins over at PPSSPP are making large strides in emulating the PSP, with recent developments getting the JIT (Just In Time) rendering working (somewhat) stably, meaning you can play with near perfect framerates. Check it out in action: For those interested, the iOS version of PPSSPP is currently available via Cydia, so if you're already Jailbroken and want to take the plunge,…

Color Sheep Review

Color Sheep Review

In looking at the description of Color Sheep in iTunes, the game is not recommended to those with color blindness. This is indeed a smart recommendation as what we have here is a color matching skill tester disguised as a sheep defending his land from a pack of wolves by firing lasers out of his mouth. It's a good disguise... a wolf in sheep's clothing if you will, but people with color blindness aside, this might only appeal to a certain type of gamer due to the reaction time involved…

Roadhouse brings Warhammer 40K to iOS

If you're the sort who likes to spend a good chunk of your time rolling dice and having pretend wars with your friends then this bit of business-y news is probably going to be quite interesting for you. Roadhouse Interactive has announced that it's secured a deal with Games Workshop to produce a smartphone and tablet game set in the Warhammer 40K universe. It's not going to be the grand strategy title you might expect though. Instead it'll be a side-scrolling action adventure that casts you as a lone Space Marine battling against a never-ending horde of Orks. Sounds to us like a twist on the endless runner with some massive weapons and splashes of gore thrown in. Think the recent He-man g…

So, let's dive in!   Dropchord - Double Fine Drops The Mic A few weeks back the boffins at Double Fine Productions let the world know about their upcoming rhythm title 'Dropchord'. While the game is aimed primarily at a release on the PC using the 'Leap Motion Controller', Double Fine also said it will be hitting touch screen devices as well. Aside from that it's anyone's guess how this game will play, so all we can do is wait for the iOS release! Fez - 'Highly Probable' For iOS Phil Fish, the brains behind Fez recent…
