Fury of the Gods Review

Review Spectral Games S.A. By Andrew Nesvadba, 11 years, 1 month ago
Fury of the Gods Review

Smashing small, angry humans in to a fine red paste (or an even finer black powder) with the powers of a god is something we've had fun with before in games like Babel Rising. So it only makes sense that Spectral Games would seek to exploit the mythos rich Greek pantheon for their take on the almost literal 'tower defense' genre in Fury of the Gods. You're given control of one of three different gods (Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades) and tasked with protecting their temple from the angry hu…

Melodive Review

As the medium matures, discussions about what constitutes a game or not are getting more prominent, as the traditional tropes of win states, lose states, and game mechanics get overshadowed or left behind by narrative and audio/visual experiences. This new balancing of how some games are put together, and what they elicit from their players will continue as more and more games like Melodive are released. There is a high score game hidden in what this title offers, but the mechanics and…

Astro Shark HD Review

Astro Shark HD Review

Astro Shark is the unlikely love story between a shark that looks like a killer whale, and a dog. Hold on, it doesn't stop being weird there. So one day the dog is kidnapped and then the kidnappers escape with it in a rocket. Not one to let this slide, the shark engages its hydro thrusters and rockets off into the cosmos after it. Apparently whale sharks can breathe in space. So on the surface this game seems like another orbital flinger where you use the momentum of traveling around p…

Unmechanical hits the App Store on the 18th

Indie 2.5D side scrolling PC hit Unmechanical is making its way to iOS devices next Monday, the 18th of March, and bringing with it a strange story or organic and mechanical life, a plucky little robot, and an incredibly powerful tractor beam. First released in 2012 for the PC, the game went on to win the Best Game award at the Brazilian International Games Festival. “The feedback from fans and critics following the PC release has been great, and while it took some time, it feels awesome to finally have the iOS version finished. We’re more than happy to share our passion-project with iOS players!” said Marko Permanto, project lead for the Unmechanical team in a press rele…

Top 3 iOS Games for February 2013

Top 3 iOS Games for February 2013

You know, it's odd that I haven't had more requests for February's Top 3 list, but then again the competition was a bit crippled. Still, there were enough to choose from to make the final list a hard pick, so lets jump in to the Top 3 iOS Games for February, 2013.   Finding Teddy (LookAtMyGame) $1.99 Univ. This month has had a bit of a theme, but considering my long standing love of Adventure games, I have to say I'm glad to see so many great releases like Finding Teddy making their way on to the App Store. Taking on shades of classics like Loom, the player must find and utilize music in order to appease the wild creatures of the strange new world she's in. It's a heart-warming tale,…

Super Stickman Golf 2 coming Thursday

Super Stickman Golf 2 coming Thursday

Super Stickman Golf 2, the sequel to one of our favourite, 5/5 winning iOS golf games, has finally been given a release date. And we don't have long to wait, because it's this Thursday. We might call it Thurs-yay from now on. This time round there are two different multiplayer modes. One lets you duke it out with an opponent in a turn based golfing duel to the death, or the 19th hole. Race Mode is also returning from the first game, letting you battle up to three opponents in a race to the cup. Golf has never been so frantic. Throw in 20 different courses with a slew of new and exciting obstacles for you to traverse, as well as customisable characters, and you're left with a game even non-…

Grow Dammit! iPad Review

Grow Dammit! iPad Review

Editor's Note: We apologize for any confusion - Grow Dammit! has been given a rating of 3/5 on our system (3.4 actual) and did not intend for a '0/5' to be showing. Once again, the title is very competent and we can only hope it gets the attention it deserves! I find it surprising that despite there being almost a three year period since Helsing's Fire was released on the App Store, few (if any) developers have tried to replicate its light and shadow puzzle mechanics. Penumbear manage…

Fly... into.. the... Danger Boat

Fly... into.. the... Danger Boat

I couldn't resist. Anyways, this Thursday on the 14th Danger Boat hits the App Store. It looks like a tight little high score game that has you driving a boat and avoiding obstacles. If it controls as well as the footage suggests, I can see this being might addictive.…

App Wrap Up (Week Ending 8th March, 2013)

Hey hey loyal readers, and welcome to another edition of the App Wrap Up. We got a good selection of interesting game trailers to look at this week that show off games that might have something interesting to offer. Interest! Let's get started!   Tricky Shot (Dream Apps Lab.) A game based around Soccer trick shots... but instead of fancy footwork, you're kicking the ball out to hit objects in the world for points. Could be fun based on the ridiculous the game might ask of you.[App Store Link]   Sky Climb (PICxPIC) A very simplistic high score game that despite its sparse presentation looks quite enjoyable, mainly due to the simple vine switching mechanic, and the responsi…

Galactic Conflict is Homeworld for your iPad

Seriously, take a look at this trailer and tell me it doesn't invoke memories of Relic's 1999 innovative 3D RTS Homeworld? And this is fantastic news. It looks quite engaging, and includes competitive multiplayer. The game releases on March 14th, so we'll see if it plays as good as it looks.…

Developer Demo of 'Prime's Quest'

Developer Demo of 'Prime's Quest'

[EDIT] It turns out that the game has been approved by Apple and is on the App Store now.[App Store Link] I may be in the minority, but I enjoy sliding block puzzles. I think it's that you can play around with them if you're having difficulty solving the problem, so there's always something to do (for instance the 'get the ball or car out of the blocks' puzzles from the Professor Layton games were among my favourite that experience had to offer). Prime's Quest looks to put a character in the midst of these sliding blocks, giving him the ability to affect the blocks' size, making it easier to move around. This developer video explains the mechanics and shows off some brief glimpses of gamep…

Fully knitted endless runner makes it onto iOS

Fully knitted endless runner makes it onto iOS

Some games make spurious claims about their graphics, staking claim to being the best looking, most polygon rich title available. Others like to brag about their features, showing off how unique they are. Knitted Deer does both of these in one fell swoop. That's because this is the first “fully knitted” game available on iOS. I'll just let that sink in for a bit. Fully. Knitted. The game sees you playing as a deed on a knitted sweatshirt, endlessly running through a world full of obstacles, vile creatures, and power-ups. All of which are knitted. Because this is the first “fully knitted” game. If you want to experience just what that means, the game is available fr…

Knitted Deer Review

Knitted Deer Review

Knitted Deer was the mini-review for the Friday News Wrap-Up for March 8th, 2013. Being visually distinct is not the same as having a good game idea - while you may stand out from the crowd in a literal sense, without the gameplay to back it up you're just a pretty, but shallow time waster. Knitted Deer by Mandragora fits in to this category, and though its ideas are sound, in execution the player is left feeling frustrated time and time again. Ostensibly the game emulates the earlie…

Friday News Wrap-Up 8 March 2013

We haven't forgotten our Wrap-Ups, but we have been busy... or sick... or a combination of both. Excuses aside we're starting to get in to the meat of the year and the releases are coming hard and fast. Lets check out the news from the last week and how it will affect you in our Friday News Wrap-Up for the 8th of March, 2013. The 7th Guest: 3 - Coming to iOS! Ahhh the good ol'e puzzle adventure game - who didn't waste a school holiday or a handful of weekends in mute frustration at the brain-ticklers preventing you from advancing the otherwise mediocre plot? As much as I mock it, I do love the 7Th Guest series and with word of a third title, rumored to be set in the Stauf mansion once ag…

Major Magnet Review

Major Magnet Review

Major Magnet is not the most observant of superheroes. In a humorously animated intro sequence, he's so happy just flying around the city, that he doesn't notice the dastardly Colonel Lastin pulling up alongside him to steal his cape, which sends the Major plummeting to the depths below. Luckily another specialty of our intrepid hero is the power of magnetism (in the literal sense, not the charismatic one). What follows is a series of small levels in which you use Major's magnet to fly…
