iCube Review

Have you ever spent time in a games shop or visited a bar or diner where they have those puzzles made of wood, metal, or plastic laying around? Maybe you need to disconnect the rings from each either, maybe you need to get an object around the grooves to the other side, or maybe like in the game iCube, you need to rotate a ball around a maze to its final destination. The funny thing is the controls of iCube sort of give the same tactile pleasure of play that holding one of these puzzl…

App Wrap Up (Thursday Edition, 1st November 2012)

Hey hey everyone. I don't know about you guys but as Summer is fast approaching here in Australia, the heat is getting pretty unbearable for me. Still, it doesn't stop me from giving you another edition of the column you all love so very very much, the App Wrap Up! As always, we're gonna look at some trailers of iPhone games that look potentially interesting, and then give some comments on them based on said trailers. If something looks good to you and you give it a go, all the better! Let's get started! Trauma Ted (Lonely Pin PocketGames) A simple little puzzle platformer about getting an injured cat to his pain medication. The levels are short and sweet, and it looks to involve so…

Nutty Fluffies Rollercoaster Review

There's something about the iOS platform and roller-coasters that just seems to 'work'. Be it tilting to keep passengers inside or flicking to avoid animals on a rampage, there's an almost innate reaction to the peril suffered by those locked on the rails that makes you want to save them. RedLynx goes one further and packs their coasters with cute stuffed animals, though it's hard to say whether the squeaking passengers help or hinder in this regard. Still, this isn't the company's fi…

ARC Squadron Review

Developer Psyonix is no stranger to the Unreal Engine having worked with Epic Games on Unreal Tournament 2004 to create Onslaught mode. As such it's no surprise to see their latest release sporting the game engine in ARC Squadron, bringing out its full beautiful potential, but most importantly, creating a fun shoot'em-up too. Immediate comparisons draw upon the likes of games such as Star Fox, though the elegant control scheme of automatically firing while swiping to move and dodge lo…

November starting off with Arc Squadron

November starting off with Arc Squadron

November 1st is a Thursday, and while many great games come out on Thursdays, this article is about Arc Squadron. Using the Unreal Engine and boasting an innovative touch control scheme, this space shooter bears more than a passing resemblance to high octane games like Afterburner. Have a look at the trailer to see what I mean.…

Pandoodle

The title is just the name of the game, since it's pretty eye-catching all on its own. Released November 2nd, this game has a sketchy art style, and a rather simple drawing mechanic. To be honest it's probably not something most of our audience would be interested in, but there's a certain charm and elegance to it, and it looks like it could be quite enjoyable. Have a look at the trailer.…

Hardly anyone paying for Punch Quest

Hardly anyone paying for Punch Quest

While Rocket Cat's endless puncher might be gaining critical acclaim, the number of people who are actually spending money on its in-app purchases is almost non-existent. Speaking to Pocket Gamer, designer Kepa Auwae stated that while over half a million people had downloaded the game, only around 0.01% of them have actually spent any money on it. "We really needed to get seen by more people, and Punch Quest accomplished that while giving us a ton of success with review scores from major sites and acclaim from iOS gamers." It's not unusual to see the less vociferous freemium titles suffering. Earlier this year Solipskier's Gasketball suffered a similar fate, with an even more dramatic c…

N.Y.Zombies 2 Review

N.Y.Zombies 2 by Foursaken Media is the sort of game that makes you glad that a developer is willing to listen to their fans. Building upon the original in just about every way, it's still a flawed experience, but one that manages to exploit the mixed state of realism and fantasy. No lengthy story set up is needed - zombies are here and you need to survive. What follows is a series of missions that follow a fairly basic story filled with protecting survivors and attempting to escape t…

Borderlands Legends Review

The life of a Vault hunter isn't an easy one - aside from the hostile environs of a place like Pandora (which is, incidentally, the planet they're on), there are Skags, aliens, and more than a few bandits who are all too happy to loot your still-warm corpse. Borderlands Legends follows on from the first title, with Mordecai, Roland, Lilith, and Brick seeking the treasure they found (and lost) from the Vault. An all new method of control accompanies Borderlands on its iOS debut, with p…

App Wrap Up (Tuesday Edition, 30th October 2012)

Hey hey everyone. I'll quell the rumours right now - this is not going to be a Halloween themed App Wrap Up. There really just werent that many Halloween themed games that look good enough to feature, and besides, there's a bit of a backlog when it comes to interesting titles for this column. As always, we're showing off the trailers of games that look like they might have something interesting to offer, and any analysis is based on said trailers. Ok, let's get started. Cpt. Backwater (Intermediaware) This is a puzzle game, the trailer makes that very clear. How it works though is a little harder to figure out. It looks like how have to slide objects into each other (possibly to mak…

Gameloft porting 12 titles to Windows Phone 8

Gameloft has announced that it's hard at work on porting 12 of its most popular iOS and Android games on to Microsoft's recently released Windows 8 Platform. There's no firm release date for the titles yet, just a vague 2012/2013, but they're a mixed bag of casual and hardcore games that should appeal to a broad spectrum of gamers. Most excitingly for Windows Phone 8 players Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour, the upcoming installment in Gameloft's CoD aping military shooter series is making the shift in the not too distant future. There's also the dynamic duo of superhero movie tie-ins The Amazing Spider-Man and The Dark Knight Rises, and sci-fi FPS epic N.O.V.A 3. You can check out all of the…

Lotsa Blocks Review

The physics block stacking game is an established mobile genre. Even more than that, giving the blocks (or whatever you happen to be balancing) personalities isn't anything new either. None of this is a problem if you can deliver the content in an interesting and entertaining way. Does Lotsa Blocks accomplish this? Let's find out. The goal in adventure mode is to stack blocks on the teetering balance beam to reach the finish line placed somewhere above. Before dragging the blocks from…

There are many reasons to enjoy the holiday seasons, but being able to grab a fistful of excellent titles at bargain prices and enjoying copious amounts of free content certainly helps. So we're back again with more news of publishers and developers alike going crazy thanks to the pumpkin-fueled period that is the end of October! Of course their Halloween update has just gone live, pushing out additional optimizati…
