Top 3 iOS Games for September 2011

After looking back at the games that punctuated the month of September, it was clear who the winners and grinners really were. That isn't to say we were lacking in decent games to choose from, but the best of the best managed to reach stellar levels, making this an amazing (and surprisingly cheap) month for fans of top-shelf gaming. Transcript Is it just me, or did September just manage to drag on and on, and on, and on, and on? After looking through the archives to work out the Top 3 iPhone games for September it dawned on me that it's probably because we had five major release days throughout the month (including the odd special release here or there) - that's a heck of a lot o…

3 New Tracks Added To Groove Coaster Official Soundtrack

You don't need me to tell you how valuable and instructive a resource AppSpy is for iPhone gaming. That's basically because you're on the site already and reading this. We've ensnared you! A-ha! If you happened to miss our Andrew's rundown of the best iPhone games of July 2011, you won't be aware that Taito's Groove Coaster made the cut. Shame on you. Putting aside your gross negligence for a minute, Groove Coaster is an audio/visual experience like no other on iPhone. Tap in time with searing hip-hop, indie, and techno beats to guide your avatar along stretches of snaking roller coaster track. The developers are clearly keen to keep you - ahem - entranced by the rhythm-action gameplay…

RobotRiot Review

While some games are interested in only approximating platformers from the 90s, Robotriot by Glowing Eye Games seeks to be the kind of game you'd have shelled out for on a Super Nintendo or Sega Genesis (Mega Drive). Although it doesn't reach the par excellence of titles like Super Metroid, it does bring back memories of Summer days spent trying to knock out the next in a series of brutal, but fair stages while blasting away bad-guys wholesale. The main character looks much like a rob…

Commander Pixman Review

As someone who had to slog his way through the 80s and 90s and the gaming obsession with platformers, coming across one of these genre classics these days is met with trepidation. I say this because we have a rich history of what does and doesn't work, including other less tangible aspects like how the should 'feel'. Commander Pixman gets the first part right as it smooshes Super Meat Boy with the visual stylings of the free game Star Guard, but something about this game by One Minute…

Monster Island Review

Monster Island Review

One has to wonder when the gameplay concept of flinging a creature across an oddly shaped level in order to destroy other creatures who are minding their own business becomes stale. It doesn't look like that scenario is upon us anytime soon however since Monster Island calls on the inspiration of Miniclip's earlier title Fragger to deliver a fun physics based flinger. So it seems that there are some monsters enjoying the monster-y good life on their monster island. Then some monster t…

Celebrity Pack Brings Glamour To Top Trumps Collection

Turn-based card game Top Trumps will never go out of fashion. I should know - I've been addicted to it since 24th March, 1991. To ensure Top Trumps keeps up with the times, the brains behind the iPhone spin-off app Top Trumps Collection are regularly dealing out content updates to its stat-hungry players. So, after shuffling up the Top Trumps pack recently with a bespoke European Football Stars edition, Mobile Pie and Connect2Media are playing what they hope is the 'ace' card. The newly available Celebrity pack, which retails for a meagre 99c, tests your knowledge of A-listers across a range of fields. AppSpy Top Tip #1: read Entertainment Weekly BEFORE you challenge a friend to a Top Tr…

Gameloft's The Oregon Trail Goes Free For Limited Time To Celebrate Incoming Sequel

Gameloft's remake of classic Apple II adventure title The Oregon Trail has been reclassified as a limited-time freebie to celebrate the impending release of its sequel, The Oregon Trail: American Settler. The game features all of the trials and tribulations that befall a 19th century pioneer, such as attacks from bandits and random bouts of dysentery. Eurgh. Through skill-based mini-games and side-missions, you'll find yourself hunting for food, fishing, foraging for berries, and repairing your wagon. Why don't you grab a horse, race over to the App Store, and grab The Oregon Trail while it's free? Go on.…

Do Do EGG! Review

Do Do EGG! Review

Do Do Egg is a game of increments. First you learn how the game works, then you learn how to extend combos, then you learn how to chain together half the board, then you win. This is a take on the very popular match-3 genre but instead of swapping around gems in groups of three or more, you're drawing lines between two eggs of the same color that have two other eggs in the middle. As long as this holds true, you can continue your line until you've clocked in a mammoth combo, and you ne…

Jelly Defense Review

Jelly Defense Review

It seems odd that despite having other games under their belt, the one thing that stands out in my mind from Infinite Dreams is 'Let's Create! Pottery'. It's strange because Pottery is less of a game and more of a toy with some objectives, but more importantly because their Jelly series of mini-games has finally culminated in the recent release of Jelly Defense on the App Store. What's immediately striking about Jelly Defense is the simple, yet perfectly zany aesthetic that uses littl…

KATAMARI Amore Review

KATAMARI Amore Review

Games within the KATAMARI series by Namco Bandai very rarely need an introduction as the setup is quite usually always the same: The King of All Cosmos has his eyes set upon collecting various interesting and wonderful objects from planet Earth and the poor 5cm tall Prince must roll it up in his 'Katamari' to satisfy the King's desire. What makes Amore so exciting is that it's not the first Katamari game to hit the App Store, so expectations are high when you consider how much more raw…

Apple Schedules 'Let's talk iPhone' Event For 4th October

Apple Schedules 'Let's talk iPhone' Event For 4th October

Apple has invited several members of the press to a special "Let's Talk iPhone" event on October 4th, which can only mean one thing: an official announcement of at least one new iPhone. Strangely, the event is being held at Apple's Cupertino campus rather than in San Francisco - the venue for all previous iPhone and iPad launches. It's still unknown whether we'll see the iPhone 5, the iPhone 4S, or both at the unveiling, though you can probably rule out an iPad 3. We can safely assume that the highly anticipated iOS 5 software update will also receive a slice of the attention next Tuesday, with some new details and a more definite release date presumably forthcoming. Hopefully.…

SHADOWGUN Review

Sure, we've had shooters before on the App Store and they've been received with mixed amounts of love and hate. Some of the best have gone on to become shrines of multiplayer fun, but the single-player experience has often been lacking as you're left with the usual draw-by-numbers war-torn battlefield formula. SHADOWGUN by MADFINGER Games, better known for their Samurai series have busted out with a gorgeous cover-based shooter in an attempt to break this routine. Sadly it stumbles fr…

Reckless Getaway Update Adds New Chapter, Extra Car and Tracks

If you rob a bank, speed along highways, and ram unsuspecting police cars in real life, you'll probably end up paying through the nose in legal fees. Luckily, if you grab Reckless Getaway from Apple's App Store, the above mayhem will only cost you $2.99. Huzzah! Even more luckily, Reckless Getaway has just been updated by Polarbit, who have thrown in a brand-new chapter, an extra automobile, and some additional tracks. Reckless Getaway managed to grab itself a excellent 4/5 at review, so speed on over to the App Store, get your racing gloves on, and get behind that wheel.…
