Telltale Games Announce Law & Order: LA For iOS

Probably most famous for their Tales of Monkey Island series, Telltale Games have branched out of late into the twin worlds of television and movies. A CSI tie-in here, and a Back to the Future adaption there: Telltale Games are certainly embracing the idea of promotional vehicles. One more to add to their film and TV canon is Law & Order: Los Angeles for iPhone and iPad, an upcoming crime thriller based on the NBC series of exactly the same name. We say ‘upcoming’ because outside of a ‘Coming 2011’ notice on Telltale’s registration page for Law & Order: Los Angeles, nobody else can shed any light on a release date. Members of the cast - including Do…

Air Penguin Review

Imagine you're a penguin collecting food for your friend's and family when, 'WHAMO!', a wild Global Warming appears and uses Sunny Day to melt your home in to tiny chunks of ice. Annoying as that may be, everyone you know is now stranded on the quickly forming islands of ice and it's up to you in Air Penguin by GAMEVIL to rescue them. The ultimate aim of each chapter may be to rescue an individual penguin, however on each stage your goal is simply to survive your trip to each flag. Yo…

Streets of Rage 2 Review

Streets of Rage 2 Review

Trying to review games like Streets of Rage 2 can be difficult - other SEGA Genesis emulated titles for the App Store have suffered from a similar problem - notably, it's hard to separate the nostalgia from the reality that is in front of you. Some games have aged poorly while others have stood the test of time and despite its age Streets of Rage 2 manages to keep its charm in spite of the emulator that surrounds it. Despite the supposed defeat of 'Mr.X' in the original title, Adam Hu…

Angry Birds Seasons Easter Update Available For iPhone

Angry Birds Seasons Easter Update Available For iPhone

Let’s safely assume that you, and indeed the rest of the ENTIRE world, are familiar with the catapulting antics of those Angry Birds. Good. Rovio’s modern-day gaming phenomenon has seen more updates than a BBC News 24 broadcast, and here’s one more. Angry Birds Seasons for iPhone is, of course, one of the franchise’s spin-off titles, benefitting - as it does - from the same high number of refreshes and extra levels as the original. My favourite chocolate-related, bunny-friendly national holiday Easter is the source of the latest update to Angry Birds Seasons on this occasion, delivering 15 new stages, a rabbity theme, and golden eggs to players worldwide. It’s probably worth k…

One Single Life Review

So why did it take so long to write a review for a game that can essentially only be played once? One Single Life is the 'Schrödinger's cat' of video games - it is at the same time a combination of some of the best and worst elements of gaming and for that reason alone (and because it's free) people should give it a go. You'll love it or you'll hate it, but working yourself up in to a froth before playing the game makes for a temporarily amusing experience. It's hard to boil down…

Zenonia On Sale To Generate Buzz For Zenonia 3

Zenonia On Sale To Generate Buzz For Zenonia 3

Gamevil aren’t the first and they certainly won’t be the last developer to pull off the following cunning marketing trick on iOS: 'Generate buzz around upcoming sequel by heavily discounting prequel in run-up to launch.' It’s an oldie cross-promotional ruse, but a goodie nonetheless. So, Gamevil have decided to reduce the price of the well-received RPG Zenonia on iPhone to 59p on account of Zenonia 3 landing on 28th April. Unfortunately for fans of the role-playing series, Zenonia’s 5* successor Zenonia 2 hasn’t joined the promotion party. Back - or is it now forward? I’m so confused - to Zenonia 3: The Midgard Story... It’ll feature Retina display graphics, tons of impro…

Resident Evil Mercenaries VS. Review

Things have been looking a little rough in camp CAPCOM for a while now and although attempting to create an online competitive experience using the Resident Evil franchise may have sounded a little odd, it was a rich nugget of gaming worth exploring if only to break new ground. The inclusion of social-like features in their mobile games (e.g. Dead Rising) has reached its logical conclusion with Resident Evil Mercenaries VS. and players can now duke it out against each other (and zombie…

Gamevil's Air Penguin Takes Flight On iPhone

Gamevil's Air Penguin Takes Flight On iPhone

Not only is the penguin the flightless seabird of choice up here at AppSpy Tower, but it’s also our favourite confectionery. You don’t believe me?!? Well, why ELSE would we have dedicated two – yes, two – iPhone game stories this Friday to this aquatic avian? Regardless, the second of our penguin-related posts pertains to prolific publisher Gamevil’s latest iOS release, which went on sale in the App Store a few hours ago for 99c. Air Penguin is its name and careering through the air is the game. Hazards such as thin ice and stubborn seals will, natch, block your hero’s path...a path that ultimately leads to the rescuing of your stranded family. Hopefully. Head of Gamevil USA…

Ideal Bureaucracy Created Papa Penguin In 48 Hours!

Ideal Bureaucracy Created Papa Penguin In 48 Hours!

In the last two hours, I’ve checked my email, written a weekly round-up, and scoured news outlets for updates on Lionel Messi’s wellbeing. I know, I know: some of you will probably be thinking, “wow, what a productive young man that Richard Brown truly is!” Others may not be. One such group of fellows in the latter camp is Ideal Bureaucracy, a Russian game development studio who recently concocted an iOS game from scratch in 120 minutes flat. The cute, casual arcader Papa Penguin was the fruit of their incredibly intensive labour, and after five further days of bug testing and polishing, this Antarctic-based adventure was shipped off to Apple HQ. (Check Papa Penguin out here.) Id…

Review 2D BOY By Andrew Nesvadba, 13 years ago
World of Goo Review

NOTE: While our site is still indicating the initial discount price of $0.99, the App has returned to its full price of $2.99 as of 15th April 2011. There are few games as easy to recommend for your desktop PC as World of Goo by 2D BOY; while there are similar titles that could be considered more challenging, the charming story and presentation of this game goes a long way to absorb and lock players in. Its eventual release on the iPad was a boon for the iOS device and a great way to…

The Relic Review

When you think about Action-RPGs and what you expect of them the list is generally fairly small. Oodles of monsters with maybe a boss or two sprinkled in; silly spells or attacks to crush them all; and maybe an item drop to push those easily manipulated brain cells in to playing a little longer. What you shouldn't need to include on the list is: being able to move around; being able to attack enemies; and being able to upgrade your skills. The Relic by Clickgamer and Axolotl Studios ha…

Cross Fingers Slides Down To 99c

Cross Fingers Slides Down To 99c

Heck, you wait all year for one price drop announcement from Mobigame and then two arrive in a matter of days. Stealth-cum-action romp Perfect Cell received the promotional treatment last week and it’s subsequently been joined in Mobigame’s iOS bargain basement by Cross Fingers. Even more exciting than the news this polished tangram-esque puzzler is on sale at 99c is the inclusion of a stack (and we mean stack!) of new levels from its creator. Retina display support and leaderboards bolster Cross Finger’s appeal, though its combination of block shifting and gorgeous packaging was sufficient to find us enamoured from the start. If you fancy taking up the mighty 390 puzzle challenge,…

Annoying Orange: Kitchen Carnage Review

Video-games, along with other media, have long since been co-opted by marketing gurus who want to cash in on their intellectual property, resulting in the much maligned 'tie-in' product. With the advent of YouTube shows becoming popular it was only a matter of time until a tie-in for one of these shows appeared and so it is with a heavy heart I dive in to Annoying Orange: Kitchen Carnage. It should be said that I do dislike the show; Orange is simply far too good at his job for me to…

Streets of Rage 2 Muscles Onto iPhone

Streets of Rage 2 Muscles Onto iPhone

You may recall that last week Japanese video game behemoth Capcom brandished two extra cabinets in its iPhone Arcade. One of the new titles made available to Capcom Arcade punters was, of course, Final Fight. (The other was 1943.) Now, almost by coincidence, Capcom’s great rival Sega has released its own side-scrolling sensation Streets of Rage 2 onto the App Store. Well, the New Zealand App Store. The original ORIGINAL Streets of Rage was Sega’s Genesis response to the Nintendo-exclusive Final Fight, so this particular duel has bucketloads of previous. Anyhow, Streets of Rage 2 for iPhone will scrap its way into all App Store territories overnight, retailing for $2.99 and guaranteei…

City of Secrets Review

City of Secrets Review

Being the classic adventure game fan that I am, the recent smattering of traditional adventure titles on the App Store has been a bit of a boon. This is no surprise considering the revival of-sorts of the genre on the PC, but who's going to question why it's happening when games like City of Secrets by Aidem Media are just waiting for you to dive in. The easy-going Mr. Mole and his friend Rex have, through circuitous means, become embroiled in the political brouhaha of a secret mole s…
