Townrs Defender Review
- First major release in its genre.
- Balanced gameplay.
- Framerate can drop low on some iPhones.
- Music is epic, but not original.
It is good to know that the first of the hero defense games to make it to the iPhone is at least a competent one and hopefully the market responds well by producing more variations. Worth playing if you love defense games and want a change from dropping towers.

Townrs Defender is a bit of a unique butterfly at the moment for the iPhone as it's the first to bring the often forgotten "third" variety of the defense genre, the hero defense. While other companies duke it out to claim the top spots in castle and tower defense, Prophetic Sky has set the standard for future hero defense games.
Movement around the screen is made with taps, but a lack of pathing logic means you'll be tapping a lot to move accurately. Attacking comes in four major varieties which are unlocked as you level your hero up. Tapping an enemy, dragging away from your hero, tapping on your hero and dragging an area on the ground. Each produces a different damaging effect, but they'll need to used in concert to defend your towers and castle.
The art is a bit of a mixed bag because it's well designed when viewed zoomed in, but to get the most out of the gameplay you'll need to constantly zoom out which results in a less than pleasing effect. You'd be forgiven if you recognize a lot of the epic music used, anyone that's been near a cinema in the last few years should find it familiar. But overall the information isn't cluttered on screen and it's often quite easy to pick out enemies.
There's a lot of room for this genre of defense game to grow and Townrs has brought all the major elements for future games to build on. Even without another strong competitor, this is still a great offering and fans of hero defense games on desktop PCs will get a kick out it.

A CALL FOR HELP
When we settled this land there were no signs of these men… these monsters. They came in waves, a tide of destruction that we have failed to contain. Our warriors have fallen, and our defensive towers have taken great damage. The town gate is strongly built, but I fear it will not hold them for long. If we are breached, this settlement and its town’s folk will be lost.
Please, I implore you. Take up our cause and wield your magic against the horde that punishes us so dearly. Know that their numbers are growing, and it seems likely that the conflict has only begun. The monsters have declared war on us all.
You must help us.
