PROS

  • The smooth and cartoony visual presentation is well done.
  • The game’s controls are simple to use.
  • Players can use their iPod during gameplay.

CONS

  • The game is quite hard as bubbles bounce so close to your head that you’ll die frequently.
  • No online leaderboard options.
  • The game soundtrack can get a little annoying after a while.

VERDICT

If you’re a fan of the original Pang, then this will be a worthwhile purchase but otherwise the difficulty and gameplay issues will turn this into a single play game.

Pang Mobile is an arcade action game where players must pop a series of bubbles with a harpoon gun. A bit of overkill perhaps but it gets the job done! Anyway, players must travel around the world popping the bouncy bubbles and staying alive in the process.

You control character movement using the slide pad on the bottom of the screen and fire by tapping the appropriate button. Players must either shoot a bubble while directly underneath or shoot the harpoon earlier so the bubble bounces into the harpoon tail. Players can also collect a number of different power-ups and weapon upgrades to make bubble popping easier.

The game’s presentation is smooth and features a number of recognisable landmarks as backgrounds. The soundtrack is good, if not a little annoying after a while but players are free to use their iPod instead. The game features two play modes and players are limited to local highscore posting only; no global leaderboards.

Pang Mobile is a game that may be restricted to fans of the arcade original Pang aka Buster Bros. While it does offer some moderate gameplay, the game is far too difficult because of the height at which the bubbles bounce. Bubbles will bounce just above your head; often so close you’ll die before you can manage to sidestep or shoot, and the rate of which this happens is far too often to make this a truly enjoyable game. However, if you’re a fan of the original, then this may be a forgivable issue that won’t hinder the otherwise solid gameplay.
