PROS

  • Nice looking visuals.
  • Good sound scape; eg. Fans cheering and announcer yelling ‘GOAL!’
  • Able to use iPod during gameplay.

CONS

  • The game takes a long time to master.
  • The controls aren’t as sensitive as you would like them to be.
  • The opponent AI is almost too hard, even on easy.

VERDICT

You will need a lot of patience to get to a moderate level in this game, but if that sounds like something you might like then Coin Soccer may be worth the current price.

Coin Soccer is a small scale sports game where you must flick coins around a soccer field to try and score a goal. You are in control of three coins and in order to advance must flick one coin between the other two. If your coin does not pass between the two other coins, then you are charged with an illegal move and it is the opponents turn.

You control your coins by swiping the area behind them in order to flick them in the direction you want. You can flick your middle coin backwards in order to redo your previous shot, as long as it passes through the middle of the other two coins. You will also need to defend your goal by moving your goalkeeper, by holding and swiping your finger on the screen.

The visuals look quite clear and crisp. The sound is a lot of fun as crowds react to the game and the announcer yells with delight when someone gets a goal. Players can also use their iPod during gameplay with no loss of these great sound effects. There are a few different modes to choose from, including a single player tournament modes, quick play and multiplayer versus.

Coin Soccer is a game that, while aesthetically pleasing, may frustrate you beyond belief. The game’s difficulty is quite steep and opponent AI is incredibly skilled. These as well as the somewhat sluggish control system, can make for some long and angering gameplay. However, if you really enjoy a challenge, then Coin Soccer might provide you with some intense coin flicking gameplay.
