Playman Track and Field from Real Networks pits you against AI competitors or your friends in a series of track and field events. There are 5 events to play through, 100 Meter Dash, Long Jump, Hurdles, Pole Vault and Javelin. Each event is played using on screen buttons to press at the right time. It seems like a throwback to earlier olympic games where button mashing was required, yet it still works great.
There are multiple modes to play through, and you can play each event individually or through all 5 events in tournament mode. There are 2 difficulty levels, and if you beat amateur you unlock pro, which is a significant jump in difficulty. If you manage to beat Pro mode, you unlock survival in which you play through the events over and over until you lose. Multiplayer consists of a pass and play system which is great fun with a room full of friends.
The graphics are cartoonish and fun, characters are animated rather well, and everything runs very smooth. There are very charming aesthetics here which do not get boring to look at. The sound is decent and cheery, though an option to play your iPod during gameplay would have been welcome.
Play track and Field is an extremely polished game, that while lacking in depth, will keep you coming back for more. Whether it is to simply beat your old high scores so you can post them on Facebook and earn bragging rights, or a friendly competetion between friends, there is plenty of longevity within this fun sports game.
