PROS

  • Simple and easy to use controls.
  • The games sound effects and music are quite good.

CONS

  • The game is a watered down clone of Nintendo’s biggest franchise, Super Mario.
  • The gameplay is ridiculously easy and offers player no challenge.
  • The game’s visuals are somewhat crude and unattractive.

VERDICT

There is not enough fun or appealing elements in Ricky to make this a worthwhile purchase.

If you are one of the millions of Super Mario fans around the world then you might want to have a look at Ricky. Not because of its gameplay or features, but because it’s a lower quality rip off of Nintendo’s favourite plumber. And if any thing mentioned sounds familiar, feel free to jump and up and yell “Mario did it!”

Ricky, the apparent illegitimate love child of Mario and Kirby, must travel across different themed worlds, collecting stars and jumping on turtles in order to save his long lost brother from kidnapping ‘Boos’. Ricky has the basic move set of the NES era platformer. You move by using the on screen d-pad and jump via the jump button. There are no power-ups of any kind, so players will have to focus on jumping on enemy’s heads to defeat them.

The levels are filled with pipes, mushrooms and blinking hills but the visuals are a little crude and look like a high school student's flash design project. The sound is surprisingly well done offering a range of musical tracks and the option to use your iPod during gameplay - if at any time you want to play; oh I don’t know… the Super Mario theme song perhaps?

Ricky is a game you’ll want to check out to see how much is ‘adapted’ from Mario but DON’T! The price alone seems a bit too high, even if you’ll get a laugh out of it. And while there are some strong elements to the game, like sound and controls, players will constantly number off the degrees of copyright infringement. All together now…1, 2, 3… MARIO DID IT!
