  • Beautifully rendered game environment.

  • No variation in gameplay.
  • Sticky movement controls.

Draw Slasher has a lot of room to grow and has a lot of online games to draw gameplay inspiration from. Being a basic hack and slash with combos will entertain some, but needs more variety to draw a bigger crowd.

Draw Slasher by Mass Creation is the kind of action game that has its roots in free online flash games and attempts to bridge the gap by bringing a fast paced and visually rich experience to the iPhone. There's no denying that this is an amazingly well polished visual game, but the gameplay doesn't manage to match this level, leaving you wanting more.

Movement of your ninja is controlled by two methods that are interchangeable as you play either by tapping or using arrow buttons in the corner of the screen. Dispatching the zombie hordes is done with a swipe to draw your slashes, resulting in a fairly immature gory explosion from their wounds. This is all the gameplay to expect from the game and there's no end to the horde until you manage to die.

Draw Slasher has an amazing art style that is clear to read despite only using a simple black and gray palette. The effect gives it a z-grade horror film feel and it immediately puts you in the right mood for taking out zombies, especially when so much detail has been placed in to the gory effects.

Ultimately this is a great little action game that could have been a show stopper. Some may find the gore unnecessary (and an option to tone it down would have been nice), but the real problem is a lack of variation and no consideration for the iPhone gamer with its unending gameplay. Action fans will enjoy the style and possible future updates and is definitely worth keeping an eye on for everyone else.
