When faced with a new platformer for the App Store it's easy to become frustrated by the lack of attention to detail in the platforming controls. Pizza Boy by ACNE Play is that rare gem where the controls are so familiar and so smooth that it doesn't matter if it's a generic platformer, because it feels like coming home to a classic.

Now I'm not talking about the physical act of controlling your character, but the feel of your character reacting to button presses as they jump, bounce and perform actions in their 2D world. In Pizza Boy you're given a two-direction d-pad and two buttons for jump and attack. These are separated in to their own section of the screen, preventing overlap and to make up for the lost vertical space players can swipe the screen to view up or down to check for hazards or special items.

The gameplay is as standard as a platformer gets, with collectable items that result in a 1-up, hidden collectables for bonus points and a basic selection of enemies, spikes and pits to stand in your way of the exit. The visuals are simply amazing as well, with sprite and background art that mimics the pixel-art style with clean modern high-resolution versions.

It's a shame that more levels or gameplay ideas weren't added in to Pizza Boy as it really is a short game to play, but what is available is finely tuned and a great basis for any future platformer. An easy game to recommend for all platformer fans.
