Guardian Knight describes itself as a tower defense game, but this doesn't really define the gameplay. Sure, there are monsters that spawn trying to attack the princess you have sworn to protect, and you gain exp to upgrade your abilities, but that's where the comparions end. It's more of an action RPG, with the princess spending each level travelling from point A to B, while you attack everything in your sight to keep her safe.

Control is touch and drag based. Movement and attacking are accomplished with simple taps, while spells like fireballs have to be dragged towards their targets. The controls are responsive but the aiming on the drag system leaves a lot to be desired. As you level up, you can spend points to upgrade not only your spells, but the princess' survival capabilities. Also, there is a store between levels where you can buy better equipment for your knight.

The graphics are a mixed bag. Some of the effects are nice, and it's easy to see what's going on, but the characters and environments are a little bland. The music and sound effects are well done and help the game along. The main campaign is all there is, with a normal and hard difficulty to be unlocked.

Guardian Knight is a unique take on hero defense and is designed to really ease the player into the game. The difficulty ramps up level by level but you always feel equipped to take on the challenges ahead of you. For those looking for a defense game of a different nature, Guardian Knight is worth a play.
