Beat It!
4 out of 5

  • Humorous and enjoyable 8-bit graphics.
  • Great music game concept.
  • Around 50 levels to play through and experience.

  • No online leaderboard options.
  • The game might not be suited for someone who doesn’t have keen hearing.
  • Only two game modes to play through.

While the game’s replay value might be somewhat limited, the core gameplay is unique and enjoyable enough to make Beat It! a worthwhile addition to your iPhone.

For all aspiring DJs, music producers or sound mixers out there, Beat It! is the game for you. In this rhythmically driven puzzle game, players must mimic a small audio clip by cueing up different instrument tracks to match the original beat and add various items to the environment around you. You must try to replicate each track as quickly and as accurately as possible using nothing but your ears.

Players place different instrument notes out on the 16 bar track by tapping where they think the note belongs. If the note is in the right place, it will shine when played. Players can replay the track if they need help but or just start from scratch if they are way off. There are a number of different power-ups that can be used during the levels as well, which can either remove incorrect tiles or fill in some correct ones.

The game’s 8-bit style visuals look terrific and give the game a ton of personality. The sound is also strong, but due to the level of detail on some harder levels, players might want to use headphones to gain the most out of their game. The game offers a career and a free mix mode but unfortunately, there are no leaderboard options available.

Beat It! is a truly unique and welcomed addition to the music game genre. Just about everything the game has to offer is full of character and is one of a kind. The gameplay can get incredibly hard at times, but it’s a challenge that future mix masters will want to take.
