3 out of 5

  • Simple and easy to use control scheme.
  • 4 different game modes to choose from.
  • The gameplay is targeted to younger players.

  • There are no online leaderboard options.
  • The game is very repetitive and gameplay does not vary.

There are no hidden surprises in Whac-a-M**e. The initial gameplay is pretty much all that’s on offer and may not be worth the current price.

Whac-a-M**e is an iPhone version of the arcade redemption game of the same name. You still must use a hammer to whack the moles that pop up out of the holes on the game machine. You must whack the moles as fast as you can in order to max out your highscore and proceed to the next round. The game ends when the round timer runs out and you have not hit the required amount of moles.

You control your mallet by tapping on a mole hole on the iPhone screen. You must tap on the incoming moles to whack them back into their holes. There are also power-ups that players can collect by whacking them and playing a small mini-game. The power-ups include different weapons to use or a time boost. The controls are pretty self-explanatory and do not differ from the arcade version.

The game visuals are cartoony and look good, while sound is typically arcade-ish in style although players are unable to use their iPod during the game. The game is single player only but offers a number of different game modes to play. There is a local highscore menu for each game but no online leaderboard options.

Whac-a-M**e is a decent game and seems like it’s targeted to younger players.  The game itself is very simple and while that may deter some people, it is a definite plus for children. There really isn’t too much to the game; you will always be tapping the screen to hit moles. And if you’re wondering what this game will be like, the title is pretty self explanatory.
