Twin stick shooters are becoming a popular genre in the appstore, but it takes something special to stand out from the crowd. IUGO have thrown out Daisy Mae's Alien Buffet onto the iphone, which is a solid entry into the genre with a grindhouse feel, fun weapons, and rapidly increating difficulty.

The standard twin stick controls are only the default for Daisy Mae. Two other controls schemes are available, one replacing the shooting stick with a button, and for those looking for an easier time, there is an auto-shoot option where Daisy will fire at any enemy that comes within a specific range. All schemes work well although the movement control can be a little sluggish at times. Once enough enemies have been slaughtered, Daisy can strike a pose, which instantly destroys all aliens on screen.

The grindhouse feel shines through with film scratching effects and the drive-in movie style menu. The models are a little simple but nothing interferes with the gameplay. The sound effects are ok, and the music is nice, but there is also ipod access. There is also plenty of alien weaponry to pick up and use throughout the game, as well as unlockable costumes for Daisy one certain conditions are met.

Daisy Mae's Alien Buffet is a fun take on the twin stick shooter genre. Even with the simplicity of auto-shoot, the aliens soon become overwhelming, but with all the different weapons, and the potential for updates from the developer, this could keep you busy for a very long time.
