TRON
Download on the AppStore
3 out of 5

PROS

  • It's free, for now!
  • Compete online for your faction in single and multiplayer games.
  • Simple twin-stick tank shooter gameplay.

CONS

  • Neon wonderland of visual confusion.

VERDICT

TRON might be a bit early off the block, but for a free game with up to 6 player multiplay it's certainly no slouch and fun to play, if only for a little while.

TRON Legacy is still half a year away, so it's somewhat odd to get our hands on the movie tie-in game App this early. Sure, there's a marketing angle to be worked here, but I'm not about to look a gift horse in the mouth.

TRON for the App Store is an action title where you control a tank from one of three different factions and compete for dominance over the internet. The tank is controlled much like a twin-stick shooter, with two analogue sticks representing the move and shoot functions, while buttons near each enable super-weapons or swap between your basic cannon and grenade payloads. Each of your basic weapons can be upgraded four times, adding damage, range and in the case of your cannon, the ability to bounce your shots off the walls. The levels consist of a miniature maze that has to be cleared of enemies to proceed and at first this is simple enough, but later levels introduce powerful enemies that can quickly force you to restart the entire level.

As you'd expect, neon-on-black is the motif of choice, however each level takes a moment of adjusting to work out just where the designs end and obstacles begin. It's a minor frustration, but it's one that carries on in to the multiplayer feature and makes matches incredibly annoying when you overlook new passages or turn too early.

It's hard to complain about a free game and TRON is definitely worth checking out, but unless you're a possessed fan it'll quickly makes its way out of your rotation.
